I feel like once you know how much grip you have and how quickly it decelerates it wouldn't be too difficult to get the hang of driving it at full tilt.

One of the main difference between professional drivers and amateurs is how quickly they learn to drive on new tracks. A regular schmuck can get the hang of it, but they might take a whole summer to get to that point.

Most of those drivers aren't pros, it's not very common to see pros driving in vintage racing. Usually it's the rich amateurs who own the cars driving them.
