Prisoners

Gritty crime thriller about a father {played by Hugh Jackman} desperately searching for his missing daughter when it seems to him that the police refuse to give a care. However, the detective assigned to the case {played by Jake Gyllenhaal} does all he can to find the girl, though the father takes matters into his own hands.

Excellent movie with great performances from both Jackman and Gyllenhaal.

Question: If you have seen Prisoners, do you think the Detective Loki character
had an Aspie vibe about him?

Don Jon
All Is Lost
The Counselor
12 Years A Slave

I finally saw the current version of "The Lone Ranger", and was fairly disappointed. Most of the film was clearly tongue-in-cheek, which affected it very badly. The only characters I really believed in were Tonto, the Ranger's brother Dan, and his wife Rebecca. John Reid just came across as way too much of a doubting pacifist for a Western hero. :(

I saw Gravity, which I thought was excellent for a movie with only two on-screen characters. I do admit that some parts were unrealistic, like the convenience of nearby space stations, but it was nice to see a serious dramatic space movie.

The Collector.

First rate horror film about a burglar named Arkin who breaks into the mansion sized house of a vacationing family - only to find they are held captive and are being tormented and murdered by a sadistic, insidiously imaginative psychopath who has rigged the whole house up with lethal tools of torture. Arkin, regularly the bad guy, finds himself in the unexpected role of hero as he tries to save the family - who believe he's one in the same as the maniac wearing an S&M mask.

Partir (Leaving)

A 2009 French-language drama by Catherine Corsini, starring Kristen Scott Thomas. Two decades of being a dutiful housewife and mother leads Suzanne to having an affair with Spanish convict-turned-builder Ivan (who was working on an extension of her new home, only just inhabited which is where the film begins). Suzanne quickly confesses to her husband and what follows is a powerful emotional drama as Suzanne is torn between her familial responsibility and her seemingly insatiable lust for Ivan. Suzanne eventually falls for the latter, but with disastrous consequences for all parties involved. I love French cinema, me.

The Frozen Ground.

Real life story of John Cusack as Robert Hanson, Alaskan businessman, family man, upstanding citizen... and sick, evil f**k who kidnaps, tortures and rapes prostitutes, then flies them out to the woods to hunt and murder them. It's also the story of Nicholas Cage as Sgt. Jack Halcombe, who obsessively seeks to avenge the murders of over 17 young prostitutes, knowing he's the only one who cares about them, because no one else does. And it's the story of a young hooker named Cindy, who escaped to tell of the monster behind Hanson's mask of sanity... but no one till Halcombe will believe her.

I also saw 'After Earth' recently. The direction was okay but they made the kid overact. It was hammy and intolerable.

I saw 'Maniac' (2012) yesterday. It was disturbing, gritty, brutal, violent, disgusting, unnerving, insane and depraved. Excellent.

Cosi with Toni Colette and it was very good and a comedy. It was one of her older movies and it is set in Australia.

Is this Maniac the remake of the earlier movie of the same name? If so, how did it compare?

The Conjuring

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren help the Perron family that are haunted by a dark presence in their farmhouse in 1971. Old school scares based on actual events.

"Thirst" by Ingmar Bergman - one of his earlier films. It's a bit of a non linear story of a couple struggling with their pasts and how it affects their relationship. It was well done for what it is, but I didn't really connect with the story.

"Winter Light" by Ingmar Bergman - much more to my taste. A pastor at a small church struggles with his loss of faith as he fails to help a man who fears atomic war. There are no easy questions or answers in this film as it deals with the questions of what do we do if we can't find anything to live for.
