Thor: The Dark World

Sequel to the 2011 comic-book movie Thor, in which Thor and Loki, with the help of Jane Foster, fight against a common enemy.

Hilarious movie that focuses more on the relationship between Thor and Loki instead of between Thor and Jane. Though this sequel leaves plenty of room for a Thor 3 {try saying that five times fast}, this was worth the price of admission.

I'm glad to hear that Loki plays a big part in the movie. The trailers made it seem like it was all about Thor scoring with Jane. :P

One question though (since I'm a Thor noob): Do you have to have seen The Avengers in order to "get it", or just the first Thor movie?

Seeing The Avengers would indeed help otherwise a few things probably won't make sense.

Alrighty then. I'll add Thor, The Avengers and Thor: Dark World to my list of movies to watch. :)

(sorry if I made it seem like I've seen Thor before; in reality I've only seen a small part of it, but it's been on my "To Watch" list for quite awhile.)

Lovelace.

Real life account of Linda Lovelace, and how she came to star in the most famous porno ever, Deep Throat, and it's aftermath.
The movie begins with 21 year old Linda falling in love with and marrying titty bar owner Chuck Tranor. When he gets arrested for a couple of his waitresses turning tricks, he convinces Linda to make a porno to raise money for his defense.
The first half of the movie shows a happy Linda and Chuck cooperating with eccentrically sleazy if not entertaining porn movie makers, and how she becomes world famous over night, rubbing shoulders with everyone from Hue Hefner to Sammy Davis Jr.
The second half tells what really happened behind the public eye, when she was physically and sexually abused by her coke addict husband Chuck, who often prostituted her, and who had forced her into the porn industry. Deep Throat had made over six million dollars, but Linda had seen only twelve thousand of that, and still she was in debt with her husband who was ever ready to exploit her with Linda Lovelace dildos and sex dolls.
In one scene, Linda had tried to go back home, telling her mother how her husband had beaten her. Her bat of a mother's response was to turn her away, and tell her to go home and obey her husband more.
Finally with the help of one of the porn businesses mob connected producers played by Chris Noth, Linda was able to break free from Chuck (Noth has his goons hold the a**hole down and whips him with a strap ), and start her life anew with a new husband and child.
Very much a good but sad, disturbing movie.

Of Gods and Men (Des hommes et des dieux)

A 2010 French drama directed by Xavier Beauvois but based on the real events during the Algerian Civil War of 1996. In short, a small group of Trappist monks, quietly co-existing in rural mostly-Muslim Tibhirine, were suddenly found beheaded. The fundamentalist terrorist group, the Armed Islamic Group of Algeria, claimed responsibility. The film explores the tension and conflict to one's faith and one's self-preservation leading up to said assassinations. Gripping stuff, all the more poignant as it's almost a pre-cursor to today's inter-faith difficulties.

12 Years A Slave

Real life account of Solomon Northrup {played by Chiwetel Eijiofor} and how he ended up in slavery for 12 years, first with a gentlemanly slave owner named Ford {played by Benedict Cumberbatch}, then with a deranged drunk named Epps {played by Michael Fassbender}.

Great acting from all cast members. Despite graphic scenes of slaves being lashed, this movie is worth watching, even if you didn't like last year's Django Unchained.

The last film I watched was The Elephant man , a film about a severely deformed man who gets mistreated and abused in life.

It brought me to tears in the end, quite a sad but thought provoking film about Human nature.

The Hobbit.

Movie adaption to the Tolkien book of the same name. If they hadn't have added the extra s**t to tie the movie into The Lord Of The Rings, the whole story could have been probably told in one movie, instead of making us wait for two more. Still, decent movie, though it doesn't compare to The Lord Of The Rings.

World War Z

The crowd scenes and arial shots were good at times but I often found the sprinting zombies and fast editing hard going. The storyline was a bit thin too. It was okay, though

Rewatched Iron Man on DVD yesterday. Great introductory movie, shame the sequel wasn't very good; I don't know if the third one makes up for it?

Also Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shamballa and Fullmetal Alchemist: Sacred Star of Milos. Oh, and Walkabout. Great stuff.

The Great Train Robbery (1903)

Very old silent film where 4 bandits stage a train hold-up, but then get hunted down by a posse.
