Rear Window

Hitchcock's 1954 suspense thriller in which L.B. Jeffries (James Stewart) spies upon and thinks his neighbour has murdered and disposed of his wife. Great stuff.

My Week with Marylin

A 2011 BBC biopic based on Colin Clark's journals, following Marilyn Monroe and the troubled production of Sir Laurence Olivier's critically-panned 1954 film, The Prince and The Showgirl. I've heard the audiobook recently, but an all star-cast including Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain) a grown-up Emma Watson (Harry Potter), Dame Judi Dench, Kenneth Branagh and Zoe Wanamaker really brought the events to life on-screen. Good show.

I saw Need for Speed over the weekend. It was better than I expected though very over-the-top when it comes to car stunts.

American Hustle.

Fictionalized account of AB scam, in which two 1970's grifters, Irving (Christian Bale having gained weight, with a hilarious comb over) and Sydney (a very hot Amy Adams) are caught perpetrating fraud by overzealous FBI agent Ritchie DiMasso (Bradley Cooper, who curls his straight hair - really, not just for the movie, but in the movie). Given a deal to help the feds take down a New Jersey mayor name Carmine who is willing to use corrupt methods to help his city, Irving and Sydney go to work for Ritchie, teaching him how to set up a scam using the false front of an Arab prince as a financier (hence the name AB scam, or Arab scam). But then this plot to ensnare a mayor who seems to sincerely want to help people, no matter if it's legal, then begins to morph into something bigger, in which there's the opportunity to catch D.C. politicians - - then the mafia appears... Irving knows they've bitten off more then they can chew when he meets the mob boss (a very scary Robert DeNiro) who they will be dealing with, and at the same time, he is sincerely conflicted with playing this mayor, who he believes only wants to help people. Sydney, his partner and love of his life, is playing Ritchie - - but begins to believe the two have feelings for each other. To make things more complicated, Irving's wife, angry and hurt by her husband's infidelity, and who begins seeing a mob under boss they are dealing with, lets what she knows out of the bag. Irving has to figure out a way to keep from going to prison, save Carmine from being scammed by the Feds, keep from being murdered by the mob, and get Sydney back.
Very first rate black comedy, with a very talented cast.

Geez, in the last Freddy Krueger movie he made, Craven, playing himself, said he was branching off from horror to make more mainstream movies. I didn't know he was actually being serious!

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

Based on South African President Nelson Mandela's autobiography of the same name. It chronicles his early life, but mostly shows his 27 years in prison, being released, and ending with him becoming President.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

New movie by director Wes Anderson. A hotel concierge named Gustav H who works in the title hotel teams up with a lobby boy named Zero to protect a painting that was entitled to him {Gustav H} by Madame D, one of Gustav H's favorite guests who later ends up murdered. Gustav H and Zero both go on the lam after Gustav H is framed for the murder of Madame D.

Hilarious, yet melancholic movie with Ralph Fiennes giving a remarkable performance as Gustav H.
