Tales of the Unexpected (1980)

An episode called 'The Hitch-hiker'. Very enjoyable - an Irish hitch-hiker makes a fool of an American academic in the course of a car journey on the M11 motorway between Cambridge and London. The hitch-hiker is played by Cyril Cusack, father of notable actress Sinead Cusack.

Tales of the Unexpected (1980)

An episode called 'Poison', referring to a snake called a 'krait', which is very tense and atmospheric early on, but becomes a bit lame in its later stages, while still delivering the obligatory 'sting in the tail' ending.

Stars Judy Geeson, who looked like becoming the next big thing as a UK acting phenomenon in the late 1960s, but was appearing in shows like this a decade later. I think she ended up running an antiques shop in Los Angeles in the 1990s, or something like that.

The infomercial for the Myotron Pulse Wave (originally aired in the 90s, watched it on YouTube).

It was basically a stun gun (though they say it's "light years away" from a stun gun).

It includes testimonials from self-defense experts, and from crime victims.

But it was the dramatizations that stood out, the last one bordered on logic-defying.

The Greatest Pharaohs

A documentary series from The History Channel made around the late 1990s. Quite interesting.

Q: Who was the manager of the Ancient Egyptian Football (Soccer) team in the 1254 BC World Cup?

A: Sir Alf Ramses.

Sorry, couldn't resist that. Not many people would get that joke these days, I reckon.

Tales of the Unexpected (1980)

An episode called 'Fat Chance'. A pharmacist plots with his lover (Sheila Gish) to dispose of his overweight wife (Miriam Margolyes). Even though the final twist wasn't very subtle, I didn't see it coming, whereas some of the 'surprise endings' in this series so far have been very predictable indeed. Probably the most interesting bit was from Roald Dahl's introduction, where he explains a method formerly used by Indian Maharajahs to murder their wives....

Tales of the Unexpected (1980)

An episode called 'Taste'. A pretentious wine expert is given his comeuppance at a dinner party by a humble cook. Not the most subtle of denouements, but quite effective. I love the way Roald Dahl in his introduction says that he drinks a bottle of wine a day, and that it's never done him any harm. Would he have even been allowed to say that these days?
