The Avengers

An episode called 'Invasion of the Earthmen' from 1968. I don't know how well known this series is or was outside the UK. It ran from 1961 to 1969, and featured Patrick Macnee as John Steed, who was some sort of agent of the security services. He had a number of assistants over the years, like Diana Rigg (as Emma Peel) and Linda Thorson (as Tara King) - it's the latter who features in this episode and throughout the final series (1968-69).

This is pretty daft stuff actually, and it hasn't aged terribly well, but it had above average production values and the episodes are still worth a look.

Overall, I enjoyed The Avengers [1961–1969]

Patrick Macnee was wonderful as "John Steed" [1961–1969]
Honor Blackman as "Catherine Gale" [1962–1964] was television's first female action hero
Diana Rigg was "Emma Peel" [1965–1968] as American television's first female action hero (the Honor Blackman years didn't make it to the U.S. 'til later)

Last night we watched:

Astrid et Raphaëlle season 1, episode 1: "Puzzle" [Mar 13, 2019]
Broadcast here simply as Astrid, in French with English subtitles

The Astrid Nielsen character is Autistic and works in the library of the judicial police.  Her special interest is criminal investigation, she has an extensive memory of the police records in the library, and her Autism allows her to approach things from unusual angles and to make connections others miss. It turns out she is helpful in solving complicated cases.

Belgian magazine Moustique wrote:
Without avoiding all the pitfalls, the series really holds up and manages to treat Astrid's autism only as an element and not a definition of the young woman
While I think my Autism is not as severe as Astrid's I do see some of my own traits reflected in her character.

Definitely Good! RECOMMENDED Good!

Been watching Wild Wild Country on Netflix. It's about the Rajneesh community that moved into a ranch in Oregon in the 1980s and started building a 'city' much to the concern of the locals. I knew nothing about it and I'm only up to episode 3 so I don't know yet if this is a cult goes bad story or a nasty nimby story or somewhere in between. It's fascinating though.

The Protectors (1972)

Another episode from the first series, entitled 'The Quick Brown Fox'. The Protectors home in on an ex-Nazi living in Spain, who has already served a ten year sentence for war crimes, and seek to have another crack at him. It's never made absolutely clear what he has done wrong, but it appears to involve a Swiss bank account and payments to associates of his living in various parts of the world. This is above average stuff for the series so far, actually.

Derek (2013)

I've now watched the whole first series of this Channel 4 comedy show. It's difficult to watch at times, cringeworthy even, but at the same time uplifting and genuinely funny. Will definitely keep an eye out for a dvd of the second series.

Succession. 8O

I didn't know Brian Cox was Scottish until today. I've never heard him use his natural accent before.

Also finished Wild Wild Country. Crazy true story, very well told.
