Poirot (2000)

Season 7, episode 1, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

Based on Agatha Christies third story about Hercule Poirot.

The previous episode was season 6, episode 4, aired in 1996. It has been four years, and the first episode of season 7 does a nice job showing that time has passed. He has retired to the country and has a garden. He is first shown yelling "I will kill you!" and angerly tossing a melon that lands at the feet of his visitors.

"I beg of you a thousand pardons, but these vegetable marrows, they have driven me to the edges of barbarity!"

As Poirot gets older, his idiosyncrasies seem to have gotten a little more pronounce, although I suspect the script writers simply enjoyed exploring this side of Poroit after such a long hiatus.
When the two visitors walk into his flat, and it is precisely 10:00 (maybe 11:00?), and the clocks chime in complete synchronicity.
He later fusses over a spot of pond water on his cuff.

I also recognized actor Selina Cadell, who plays Mrs. Tishell on Doc Martin. This is the first time I've recognized her in another show, although I see from her filmography she has been on Father Brown.

Shirley Jones is running for office. Her primary speech writer quits. Who could Shirley get to write speeches?... and invite MURDER... Eddie Albert (Green Acres) plays her super rich husband.

Not posting every Murder, She Wrote either. I am watching them though.

The actors interested me in this episode

Lucille Ball Jr and Patty McCormack play a couple Cagney and Lacy cloned detectives. Complete with accents. they are Chadwich and Stacy. Firstnames? Kathleen and Bess. I am amused.

Jean Peters is in the episode. I wondered "Where have I hear that name." Looked her up. She was married to Howard Hughes. I've never seen her in anything, although she was in Niagara, but I haven't seen that yet. She plays a recluse.

Erin Gray has a role as well. Where did I Erin Gray from? Buck Rogers in the 25th Century? No. The Guild by Felicia Day where Erin plays a character loosely based on her character from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. Love The Guild. She was also in an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Barbara Bosson is in it too. I know her from The Last Starfighter. In this, she over acts.

What We Do In The Shadows.

Last night we finished watching our way through the seven seasons of:

Elementary [2012–2019]
<=>"New Holmes. New Watson. New York."



They made many allusions to the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories but updated things:
<=>- Sherlock Holmes got addicted to heroin
<=>- His very, very rich father shipped him off (out of the way) to New York
<=>-+-and, after rehab, hires a "sober companion" to help Sherlock's recovery
<=>-+-...and that companion is Dr. Joan Watson ^{a former surgeon with issues of her own}
<=>- And they work well together and solve crimes!

This series has some grittiness to it and this flawed Holmes might not be as personally likeable as some others...but he is still brilliant and focused on solving crime.

The series does, however, actually work a lot of deduction into the stories. Its quality and attention to detail does not fade off as we progress through the seasons. And they resist the obvious story idea of having Holmes and Watson romantically involved...their relationship stays professional and platonically friendly even though they live in the same home (though both do sometimes find romance or sex elsewhere as the series progresses).

Enjoyed the conclusion. I did not expect it to resolve the way it did.
