And they resist the obvious story idea of having Holmes and Watson romantically involved...their relationship stays professional and platonically friendly even though they live in the same home (though both do sometimes find romance or sex elsewhere as the series progresses).

I remember enjoying the show as well, when it originally aired.
I agree about Jeremy Brent. I grew up watching Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes on weekend afternoons and thought he was the ultimate Sherlock Holmes, until I saw Jeremy Brent. No offense Mr. Rathbone.
I'm torn for a second place. Benedict Cumberbatch or Jonny Lee Miller? I like both. I should watch Elementary again, as you have.
I also get nostalgic when I hear the violin music for Jeremy Brent's Sherlock Holmes.

Started watching Elementary. I remember liking it, but I forgotten how much.
I apologize. I miss-spelled Jeremy Brett's name.
I agree Basil Rathbone was the definitive Holmes until Brett came along.
While Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes might be visually more impressive and spectacular than Miller's I definitely favor the less pleasant-to-watch Elementary over Sherlock. I think the latter series started out incredibly strong but then got increasingly more shallow and less reasonable...while getting increasingly more spectacular.
And I'll sneak in a mention of Robert Downey Jr.'s Holmes. I think they did an impressive job of doing a visually-spectacular, big-budget, special-effect-loaded film about Sherlock Holmes.
