Aviya's Summer (הקיץ של אביה, HaKayitz Shel Aviya)
The poignant true-life tale of a young girl's struggle for survival in the post-Holocaust era. Set in 1950s Israel, this two-part film saga continues in Under the Domim Tree. Both were produced and written by Gila Almagor.
so there is a sequel, yey. i may get around to watching that possibly if the foreign language section of my library doesn't fail me. this film, while a bit short, i did like.
looking at the box though, i don't know what i was expecting. an image on the box shows her behind bars, screaming. i thought that she was in some sort of camp (i didn't know what it took place after i started watching it, duh) but it turns out it was just a gate.
shot in location in kfar avraham, petah tikva. the dirty roads, arid, yet with no shortage of trees (palm) reminds me of mexico when i went...or perhaps more my parent's memories of the place when they lived there when they were like Aviya, when such dirt roads were more common and it was not as developed as the mexico or israel of today.
the birthday party scene was especially affecting.
