Just saw the pilot episode for the British version of Shameless.

So I saw a few episodes of the US version, and soon lost interest. To me it seemed the point was simply to for the audience to laugh at people living "at the bottom". Whereas the British version has a genuine affection for the characters, and to me seems to have something to say to us about class, without being even slightly preachy. I'll admit the British have always been better than Americans at not being preachy, but it has often seemed to me that British and Canadian humor usually tends more in the direction of pitiless ridicule whereas Americans feel the need to be "nice" about things. But in this case just the opposite (although I won't insult any British or Canadians by saying there's anything "nice" about Shameless). Also the US remake, as I recall, had much more nudity than the UK version which is not the usual situation.

I was then astonished to discover that the American version rates HIGHER on IMDb than the British one, which is also not the "usual situation". I suppose I'll have to go and re-watch the US version to try and figure out why.

I used to love watching Shameless me

Frank Gallagher seems to think he's some kind of working class hero

It seemed to me the US version of Frank is just a clown. Maybe I should rewatch it in case what I just said wasn't fair.

Oh the Frank Gallagher in the UK one is a clown

I did see a bit of the US version a few years ago and I actually thought it was ok but it's definitely nothing much like the UK version but that's probably a cultural thing

Well I thought about this a bit more, and one problem that occurs to me is that they set it in Chicago. The premise might have worked better had they chosen Boston or a medium-sized Rust Belt city in the Midwest, like for example Akron.

The X Files.

The episode where Brian Cranston, as a paranoid redneck, worked with Vince Gilligan for the first time.
