'John Carter' was both surprisingly and disappointingly good. When it came out, it tanked hard and I was left with no choice but to see it because, well, box office bombs are my specialty. I was hoping to see an unmitigated disaster of a film, but instead I got a pretty solid if flawed sci-fi adventure.
'John Carter' is a prime example of how marketing can make or break a film. The trailers and television commercials showcased absolutely none of the its strengths and almost made it look like an entirely different movie. I think most people dismissed the film altogether based on how generic the commercials made it seem. Worst of all, though, had to be the alteration of the title from 'John Carter of Mars' to just 'John Carter'. What the heck was wrong with "of Mars"? Is outer space just not cool to kids anymore? "John Carter" is just such a terrible name for that type of movie.
IMO, I thought visually the
John Carter movie was great, but Disney made all the wrong decisions in terms of well, everything in order to make this movie a success. At one point, Paramount and Sony were set to teamup for their own
John Carter movie with Robert Rodriguez filming it the same way he did
Sin City, entirely against green screen.
