Dwain Esper made some weird movies in the 1930s featuring random inserted footage of things like cats and dogs fighting, for example... .

Maniac is the tale of a vaudevillian serving as an assistant to a doctor who is attempting to raise the dead. He succeeds in raising one dead person with the help of the assistant impersonating the coroner, but the doctor demands "a victim with a shattered heart". Fighting cats and dogs scare the assistant away from the morgue, so the doctor declares "Coward! You have failed me in the greatest moment of my life! Wuhahahaha!", and pulls a gun out of a drawer. Offering the gun, he says "I get it. You work with me you have faith in me. Take this, take it and take your life and I will give it back to you. This beating heart will beat in your body and just think of it you will live! Muhahahah! Live! Muhahahahaha! Live!"

With that the assistant shoots the doctor. "Murder. How horrible. And of my benefactor". He soon discovers that the doctor would be missed and he never would, so he disguises himself and impersonates the doctor. But, oh no, a patient has arrived, believing himself to be "the ourang-outan murderer from Poe's Murder in the Rue Morgue". He stumbles about not knowing what to do so he reaches for the doctor's sachel and finds "Super-adrenaline.... I can't use that. I know... water... That will do no harm and I'll be rid of them". He mixes up the two syringes and injects the patient with superadrenaline. Famously, the patient declares...

"Stealing through my body, creeping through my veins, spilling in my blood, Oh, darts of fire in my brain! Agony! I can't stand this torture! This torment! I can't stand it, I won't I won't!"... He then grabs the revived corpse and takes it away...

We later learn that their pet cat is called Satan. We learn that the neighbour raises cats and rats for fur... "The cats eat the rats, the rats eat the cats, and I get the skins". At one point he claims that the cat Satan has "the gleam" and so he pops out his eye, and observes that "It's not unlike an oyster... or a grape!" and swallows it...

Ah, but there's so much more... including a catfight with hypodermic needles. If you want I can post the links to the Internet Archive from where you can watch Maniac or another Esper picture, Marihuana.

I would very much like it if you could point me in the direction of those links, xenon13. I hadn't heard of him, but it sounds like awesomely over-the-top absurdity. Plus, I'm a fan of traditional 1930s horror- it'd be fun to see a director from that time/genre that didn't quite make the mainstream.

Towelhead...I wouldn't say that this is the weirdest movie I've ever seen, but it was definately very disturbing and far too graphic for me. I definately would never recommend this movie to anyone. It's just a little too freaky.

This thread is a goldmine! I'm always seeking out bizarre and disturbing movies A few months ago I got a bunch of disturbing foreign movies and watched them all within a week. Nothing phases me anymore in movies, the weirder the better :D

Fur with Robert Downey Jr. and Nicole Kidman. It was a really creepy fictional account of the life (and hairy love) of photographer Diane Arbus. If you're into psycho-sexual weird, this movie is for you.

I'm still waiting for something to top "lost highway" by David lynch. I never though a pale guy with a video camera could be so scary.

Has anyone seen the 1930s movie Freaks? It's about sideshow people with some significant disabilities who get their revenge.

This one takes the cake. Executive Koala.

A 6 foot tall Koala is a business executive. When his girlfriend is murdered, he is the prime suspect, and though he does not believe himself to be the killer, murderous nightmares and apparent gaps in his memory force him to question whether or not he is who he thinks! The film also contains martial arts battles and a musical number. I just watched it earlier today and loved it; it's hilarious.

When reorganizing my shelf of anime movie DVDs, I found on that I had completely forgotten about: Miyuki-chan in Wonderland.

Basically, it's a horrible remake of Alice in Wonderland, where they've replaced all of the characters with hyperactive lesbians in BSDM costumes.

And of course there's the plethora of insane anime movies. Paprika, Akira, Perfect Blue, etc.

o.O That sounds kinda cool. I love twisted takes on Alice in Wonderland..."American McGee's Alice," the kickass "Return to Wonderland" comic...but if it's really that horrible...hmm.

The real question is, is it Hentai? Because that sounds a LOT like Hentai...lol.

There are indeed some weird ones here, and yet some that fall short, I must opine.

Never fear, I'm here to make it right.

First off, if you look up Mystery Science Theater 3000 you will find a fine list of truly bizarre pictures at all levels of oddity. And failing finding anything fresh there, feast your peeps upon the list I have run across over the years.

Eversmile New Jersey - traveling dentist?
The Loved One - Jonathan Winters scarier than ever, and the world's first female embalmer
The Ruling Class - Oh, they made him believe he was Jack, alright...
Twilight of the Cockroaches - animation, just when you think they're kidding it gets weirder.
Son of the Blob - not as weird, but hilarious.
The Omega Man (that particular version) - such a creepy movie, not scary, just weird
Soylent Green - famous for its weirdness
Logan's Run - could be weirder I guess
Glen or Glenda - I can't believe this one hasn't come up yet
(Similarly) The Ed Wood Story - which I enjoyed but do not own, too much swearing for me
Deadly Friend - because as long as her body is alive, she is, right? Who knew basketballs were explosive...
Household Saints - proof that it can be good and still weird
Time Bandits - Terry Gilliam is pretty much another way of saying weird, I think
Pushing Up Daisies - can't remember much, but it was weird.
Pray for the Wildcats - starring Bill Shatner and the lusty Andy Griffith, at least, he is in this one... ugh...

I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Oh, and though it's not so weird, I must in Andy Griffith's defense recommend "A Face in the Crowd" where he thoroughly distinguished himself.
