the story is fictional, and the timeline and events are symbolic, while certainly possible.
larger scale disasters may very well happen sometime soon in the next few decades, like they have already.
if the humans are unable to at least slow this process, you may very well live to see the end of civilization.
Although I was anticipating that after the disasters the planet won't be comfortable enough for species like humans to survive.
