Diane Kruger to play police detective with Asperger's in new FX series 'The Bridge'

NEW YORK, March 29 (UPI) -- German-born actress Diane Kruger says she has signed on to star in "The Bridge," a new FX crime drama set on the Mexican-American border.

"It's an American adaptation of a Scandinavian show," Kruger told United Press International in New York this week.

"It's myself and Demian Bichir. [It's about] immigration, drug cartels. My character suffers from Asperger's [syndrome,] so there is a whole aspect to that as well."

The actress said she has been doing a lot of research to prepare for her role as a police detective on the show, which is to premiere this summer.

"That's all I've been doing," she said. "We're very lucky because Autism Speaks just came on board to be a partner of the show and we found this amazing young man who has Asperger's, who is going to help me portray it accurately because....

I think the comments in the comment section and the part of the quote I bolded express my concerns in a way I can't without repeating anything.

The original series "The Bridge" that's set at the Danish/Swedish border is seriously one of the best shows I've ever seen. Sofia Helin who plays the female aspie cop (Saga Noren) is an amazing actor and is properly the most accurate portrait of an aspie I have ever seen. I was so lucky to meet and talk to her while being an extra on season 2 of The Bridge two months ago! I was obviously to shy to talk to her, but since I mentioned my aspergers in my application she came up to me! It was so incredible and I think I taught her a thing or two ;)

Anyways, I'm really excited to see the American approach and if you can't wait, PLEASE check out The Bridge (you can watch it with English subtitles by the way). It's awesome.

As an American of largely German extraction, I'm damn happy someone of my nationality is a hottie! I say that, because in my opinion a lot of us Deutschers aren't such lookers.
It's cool that she plays an Aspie, too.

I'm pretty much praying for an accurate portrayal. If it isn't, I'll just sigh and move on.

I'll never understand why US TV has to remake wonderful foreign films and series. What's wrong with subtitles, or if it comes to it, dubbing?

Because people in the American entertainment industry want to make money off of good foreign TV and movies.

FX has some pretty fantastic programming ("Louie", "Wilfred", "The Americans", the sadly-cancelled "Terriers", etc.), so I have high hopes for this show, whereas if I were to hear the same thing coming from a lesser network I'd probably expect a pretty heavy-handed approach. I'll try to check it out.

I don't suppose anyone knows when the pilot airs? I'm interested in seeing this, there aren't enough shows out there with outwardly proclaimed aspies, just characters who obviously act autistic but whose writers are "afraid to use the label".

It's expected to debut sometime in July of this year. I expect it should receive some promotional ads from FX in the coming weeks and months with a more specific pilot date.
