Avatar is the only film I'm truly looking forward to. More than Star Trek, Watchmen, and any other recent films. Cameron's last film was Titanic and despite the lambasting it received from dudes it was well made and engaging.
I've seen most of Cameron's film and they've been great even the slow one (The Abyss, Titanic). But if there's one thing Cameron does well it's creating franchises (Terminator) or resurrecting existing ones (Aliens).
Despite a few documentaries (Aliens of the Deep, Volcanoes of the Deep Sea, and Ghosts of the Abyss) and minor writing and producing credits (The Muse, Solaris), Avatar will be Cameron's full Writer/Director/Producer return to sci-fi. Something not seen since 1991's Terminator 2.
Looking forward to it! 
Wikipedia has more information about Avatar. Oh, and don't confuse this movie with the Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, otherwise simply called The Last Airbender.
