People are going on and on about this movie like it's the cure for at least two different types of cancer. I saw the trailer about an hour ago. Impressive, yes. But the planet itself just looks like a jungle, not even remotely exotic. Only the creatures within look remotely exotic. And the plot sounds like it has been done a thousand times and more, with the only relatively original variation being the remote-control alien thing (is that the 'Avatar' of the title?). Actually, now that I come to think about it, does this movie remind you of a sci-fi version of Dances With Wolves? Or The Last Samurai?

I completely understand, actually.

Still, this to me is why Hollywood is a success as an entity: only through this system can a filmmaker have the previous success in their career to produce such a massive, technically ambitious piece of storytelling. Without it, a world that massive could never be fully developed, and an artist like Cameron wouldn't be able to indulge a fantasy so thoroughly complex. He's the Howard Hughes of filmmakers, in that he's got so much obsessive urging to push forward his own capabilities, and for me having him and his work more than makes up for the countless thoughtless and bloated, emtpy and souless movies that only seem to exist for the short time you sit in the theater and consume it; Cameron's work is unforgettable, and begs to be watched and absorbed.

I'm at a point in my screenwriting where I seem only to thirst to create a movie like District 9, by which I mean that I have extreme control over the creative end result at the expense of a smaller audience and less marketing towards massive distribution - just small, extremely focused and personal storytelling that reaks of the creator's desire to express themselves and explore an idea. Cameron and Avatar is a reminder that through enough success, you can create fully-reallized worlds and film them to your leisure. How can than not entice me?

I watched District 9 only a few hours ago at the cinema. A very intense film. Very dark, bleak, disturbing, distressing, violent, but ultimately a good film.

And I understand what you are saying. But do you really want to create big, all-encompassing movies? Or do you want to make smaller scale ones?

A friend sent me a link yesterday going on about how cool it looks. I refuse to ever download quicktime, so cant watch it (will have to check youtube to see if it's hit there yet). But isnt it based off a nickelodeon cartoon? and directed by James Cameron? Honestly, the nickelodeon part doesnt bother me, cartoons are always fun and can make for some entertainment, but serious film? doubt that, and Titanic was nothing but a catered to the masses cheese-ass love story.
I dont see how this movie will be anything more than a decent popcorn flick, at best.

This movie is an original spec screenplay, the movie you're thinking of is coming next year and is just called The Last Airbender because Cameron got the legal rights to use "Avatar" as a title some years before that Nickelodeon show ever debuted. M. Night is directing that adaptation.

Hopefully, I can tackle any material that catches my fancy. I do know I'm hoping to only direct my own scripts, but honestly, I'm looking forward to do all scales and a good deal of genres. It is my dream to be able to create something similiarly large as Avatar in what I hope can be a long career.

Ah, ok. Makes a little bit more sense now. I was thinking Cameron maybe was going the route of whats his name who did 'From Dusk till Dawn' then started doing all those Spy Kids movies for his own kids. Kinda makes it a little more interesting. I just read something about how it's suppose to use some cool new film technology that Cameron has been developing over the last 10 years, why he hasnt wanted to release anything, until he perfected it and enough theatres had the right equipment to show it.

Sounding little more interesting, still, Titanic was just such a bland on-par made for hollywood film, i'm gonna go into this one real skeptical.

p.s. i'm also not bashign Cameron, The Abyss, Aliens, Terminator are all classics in my book that I can watch over and over, he just sooo sold out his soul on Titanic that I can not let it rest =P
