I don't know if anyone else had, but I had seen a few poster at certain places that said something about humans only, they look like this.

I thought it was interesting but had no idea, but apparently it is part of an add campain for a movie called District 9, as far as the trailers show, it has something to do with aliens. I did a little bit of googleing and found out it is about alien refugees on earth, and how they are being treated, well apparently they are treated by humans just like they treat any other different people, poorly. There are some pretty cool online sites and stuff that you can look up, such as a site that is meant to be what is used for Humans and "Non-Humans" to get news and rules, and puts up a good job of looking prefesional: http://www.d-9.com/. Another site is set up as a blog from one of the aliens how he talks about, how things are, how they are treated and other interesting stuff, including fake coments of what one would expect from both alien and humans: http://mnuspreadslies.com/.

I am quite excited about this movie as it looks like it might be set out at least a little bit like a documentry and is meant to teach people about how everyone should have equel rights, plus it has cool aliens.

I keep hearing about the movie a lot. What I heard that it will leave the documentary feel after 20 minutes of the film.

I saw the movie today and I have high praise for it. I am surprised more people on this site havent gave it as much attention, it kind of focuses on that though people may be different, even from another planet, we shouldnt look down on anyone for that reason. It shows how there is such a negative mind on the aliens and they are treated less then human for varias reasons, but some were truly inteligent and had realistic feelings. It does a great job as both as being an interesting documentry, not having to focus on perfect camera control, instead it is often done in a shaky tapeing of what they see, and when some of the action comes it is very enjoyable. I would recomend people see it if you want to see the human condition of racism, fear and are not afraid of a bit of gore, (dead aliens and a bunch of Humans get blown up aswell, though the humans wer bad guys).

My favorite movie next to star wars ep 5 and ep 3 is district 9 with terminator salvation in 4th and terminator 2 in 5th. I'm a sci fi freak and this movie was simply amazing. Make District 10 Neill Blomkamp, I want to see wha happened to Christopher Johnson and his son and I want to see more of Wikus Van Der Merwe as a prawn.

I agree that they should make a sequel, hopefully this movie can get enough attention so that we can find out what hapends next, how will the home planet react to the mistreatment of their people.

This movie far exceeded my expectations. I saw the trailer and said, "A movie about an alien ghetto? That's the stupidest idea I've ever heard", but I went to see it because my friends did and when I got out I said, "This is the best science fiction movie that's come out in years!" I was especially impressed by the combination of spectacle and subtlety, the character arc of vikus, and the performence of the people who animated Christopher.

I saw the movie, and although I'm not going to give away the plot or any significant details of the movie, I will say that there is only one word to describe this movie...BIZARRE. It was not bad by any means, but it isn't the greatest thing I've ever seen.

However, I will say this much, I think this movie does an excellent job of showing how inhumane man can be to his fellow man. One of the fascinating things was that the aliens were first rescued by humans and were properly treated for their malnourishment at the beginning of the movie. However, after the aliens could not leave Earth due to the technological failure of their mother ship, humans then hated them and considered them the lowest form of life. Ironic really, a far more advanced extraterrestrial race being treated as lower than a human being. It goes to show how hateful and bias people can be and how they can use their own ignorance, fear, and insecurities to tear other people down to build themselves up and make them feel superior to others. The aliens in this movie, in my eyes, were more human than the humans themselves, rather ironic!

I also found it interesting how the protagonist of this movie starts out being a human being dedicated to the idea of relocating and evicting aliens from their homes. In a sense, he is a good guy, and he tries to do the right thing, but he has no qualms about moving these aliens out. However, in an ironic twist of fate, he becomes as hated and distrusted as the aliens, and it is only through this that he gains the perspective of the aliens and learns to treat them with dignity and respect, instead of fear and anger. He is a human who ends up becoming more human than the society in which he belongs at the end.

If one was to look at this movie as an analogy or allegory for the potential cruelty and destructive nature of mankind, I would say it was a great movie. However, from a science fiction perspective, I must say that I was more or less not impressed. Although there were aliens and alien technology in this movie, I believe this movie was more about inducing thought provoking scenarios, and showing the potential extent of man's potential destructive and hateful nature.

I really, really liked how they used those timely interview clips to show the exploitative, self-serving hypocrisy of the human animal. If not the outright savageness...

This is probably what would happen in the same set of circumstances, (I'm referring to the slums more than the actual way the story progresses) since it's the kind of pattern we tend to display amongst ourselves.

I haven't seen it yet but it's the first sci-fi movie I've heard of that has an all South African cast. The title and events are actually inspired by District 6, a residential area in Cape Town where 60000 inhabitants were forced removed under the Group Areas Act under apartheid law. So theme is actually actually about racism but replaces people of other races with aliens from space.

Pretty much... a lot of times you'll see signs in the movie (or the ads) that are just like the old apartheid signs except with aliens on them. Just flip the 6 and you've got 9, eh?

BTW Jono, I can only imagine the sense of wonder in seeing your hometown's skyline in a movie with a giant cg spaceship hovering nearby

Probably one of the interesting points is that a lot of the themes of the movie are not too out there. I have been searching for some good pictures of the "shrimps" for an avatar but their is not many good quality pictures.

Sure does. I recognize the skyline because you can see the the Hillbrow Tower in the outline.

You will not be disappointed. Think of -Alien Nation- and -Independence Day- meeting Apartheidt. It was interesting to say a movie made in the Republic of South Africa with a South African cast. Nifty. I hope to see more movies made in that part of the world.

Also the Prawns were very interesting aliens.

Saw it today and thought it was great. I felt a strong empathy towards the tone of the movie and it's definitely how I would expect people to behave. I think this film actually provoked a stronger reaction in me than a lot of films I've seen that are meant to move you. It puts Michael Bay to shame, as well. Seriously, give him two hundred million dollars and he comes up with Transformers 2, which while interesting in terms of how much stuff he could blow, is piss poor when you compare it to what the guys did on this film. With a budget of like thirty million?

District 9 really savaged (pardon the pun) the blacks from Ghana. The Ghana blacks were gangsters and gang bangers that sold contraband to the Prawns. Especially cat-food which got the Prawns high. The traded cat-food for weapons. The Ghanians were portrayed as savage, brutal and even cannibals. For politically correct types this would come across as racist.
