Which era of T&J was the best?

I liked the Chuck Jones era the best.

Obviously, I chose the MGM era; however, the Chuck Jones' era had the best sound effects.

The music is why I like the Chuck Jones era the best!

I like the opening where Tom meows in lieu of the MGM lion's roaring.

I've got a thing for the 1930's, so that makes me biased. But I really do prefer the cartoons from that time. Chuck Jones runs them a close second, almost a photo finish, though, for obvious reasons.

The Deitch and Filmation eras were just crudely drawn, and the Hanna-Barbera era was just too campy for my tastes.

I liked the MGM shorts which featured Tuffy (the gray mouse wearing a diaper) because of the piano notes when he walked. I always said that he "tinkled", because the sound effect sounded like someone going #1.

I also liked the ones featuring the little duck.

There have been particularly bad phases in many cartoons... The recent trend in cartoon movies (of older cartoons that adults remember fondly) is a return to the manner of the old. There have been some pretty good Tom and Jerry movies in the last couple of years. Not great, but with the distinction of having the two of them returned to type, non-speaking, pounding on each other. Scooby Doo was doing pretty well, too, with the animated tv films, but the live action attempts have fallen flat. Anyway, there was that phase of Tom and Jerry where they were buddies and never did anything remotely interesting. It was a whole phase of Saturday morning cartoons. I think the strain that put on our collection sanity showed at last with cartoons like Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs. People missed the old Warner Brothers, Chuck Jones, Tex Avery type stuff. Shoot, even old Disney shorts had more going on. Donald Duck fighting Hitler is a must see. Well, he was doing something or other, Hitler was there somewhere... it's been a while.

A'ight, I will leave the thread to return to topic now.

On that note, I thought the diapered mouse was Nibbles. "He's always hungry!"

Were you thinking of the Donald Duck short "Der Fuehrer's Face"? I saw that on YouTube the other day.

That was it! Now I remember, I came across it while looking up info about the song. I have my kids listening to that song. I explain it, too. Gently, mind you, but truthfully.

They should make a collection of the lost propaganda cartoons. There were some made only for the troops, though, as I understand it, that might require a warning label.

I agree about the lost cartoons. Many of them were censored because of racial stereotypes from the time that they were made (1930s/40s/early 50s).
