When Troi was introducing herself to someone who thought she was a full Betazoid, she said, "I'm half Betazoid, my father was a Starfleet officer."

So? Starfleet officers are all human? Worf is a Starfleet officer so is Data, Spock, Dax...

She didn't say she was half human, she said she was half Betazoid, not full.

I don't remember the scene.
For that sentence to make sense as a stand alone quote, it is assumed it has already been established in conversation that her mother is Betazoid.

In going strictly by her sentence construction it kind of comes out looking like
"I'm half Betazoid, [because] my father was a Starfleet officer."

That wording, if it is already established her mother is Betazoid, does in fact imply that Starfleet officers are not going to be Betazoid.

Which is kind of, uh, paradoxically ironic(?), because Troi had herself been given officer status, although she was not technically an actual commissioned officer.

Alternatively, if it is not already established when that sentence is said that her mother is Betazoid, it could be taken that her mother is not and Troi is half Betazoid because her father was a Starfleet officer, and Starfleet officers are Betazoid.

That's why context is so important when examining quotes.

Even worse when you consider that this is not accurate - Troi was indeed a commissioned officer, with a rank of Lieutenant Commander. Capt. Picard just let her walk around out of uniform most of the time - it wasn't until Jellico took command during one assignment that she was forced to wear a Starfleet uniform and display her rank. After that, she would sometimes wear the uniform, sometimes the fanservice V-neck shirt.

I don't remember if it was in the sixth or seventh season that Troi took the command test, the one that would let her be promoted to full commander (LCDR was the cap if you didn't take and pass the test) and give her the authority to take the conn.

I think that happened on the same episode in which Data walks into a primitive village with amnesia carrying a special container of radioactive metal. And then the local blacksmith starts making jewelry for everybody with it. :lmao:
