It’s impossible to determine which is the highest grossing film because of inflation, especially since even the calculation of inflation has been changed throughout the years. So the success of a movie can only be determined by the highest ratio of box office sales to production cost. Which movie do you think is the most successful?

Recently? District 9. With just a $30 million production cost, it obtained $200 million gross revenue, and a 90% approval rating on Rottentomatoes.com.

Paranormal Activity grossed just over $100 million and cost $15,000 to make. Largest profit ratio to date i believe.

Impressive, I had heard people mention it in passing, but I never got around too looking anything up about it, let alone see it (I pretty much haven't seen any movies since the summer).

It was made in the directors house and it sounded like the two actors were just people either friends or just people off the streets. Attack of the show talked all about this.

Both of these films had very large budgets. Psycho was made with a budget of less than $1,000,000 and is a cinematic masterpiece.

"Titanic" is probably the most successful film.
