Has anyone seen this film? It is one of my favorites. This is one of my favorite sequences and the artificiality of the sets just increases it's dreamlike quality for me. This scene is a respite from the intensity of the pursuit of the Robert Mitchum character of the two children. You know the cliche of love tattooed on one hand and hate on the other? Well, this is where it came from ( I think). It's an intensely visual film, there's even a scene of someone murdered that's frankly beautiful if you looked at it for it's visual composition only.

I saw this film on TV ages ago and I remember I loved it.
But all I really remember about it now is Robert Mitchum shouting "Whores of Babylon!"
And the "love" and "hate" on the knuckles of course.

I bought it on DVD a few months ago, but I haven't watched it yet.

I believe it was the only film Charles Laughton ever directed.

It's a very dreamlike movie. I think it was ahead of it's time. It pushed some boundaries that hadn't been pushed before. Lillian Gish is in it and I have 6 degrees of separation with her. My aunt by marriage, who's maiden name is Gish is distantly related to her. They have exactly the same mouth.
