What would be the most terrible english dub possible? It doesn't have to be of an existing anime, it could be of a manga, doujinshi, whatever, it would just need to be terrible.

My vote is for Yotsuba&! There is not a single way it could possibly be done well and still have all the comical value in it, and I just can't imagine english voice actors capturing the moment well.

The anime series Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (or better known as simply Sailor Moon) had a pretty crappy dubbing in North America. What was originally a serious anime aimed at young adults was turned into a silly, cheesy cartoon aimed at kindergartners. See for yourself:

I've only known two dubs to be so bad that I couldn't even watch them: X (tv series) and El Hazard's OAV.

I saw a bit of that dub before bothering with subs... I can't bring myself to try watching the sub...

I think the worst experience I had was with the dub of Familiar of Zero, some of the voices they chose just changed characters too much.

Actually I think it might be Full Metal Panic, most of the voices did not fit what the original characters, I can barely stand hearing them do the copyright warning at the begining of the DVD. Like turning serious voices humourise, it just grates my ears. Granted that some like it.

The .hack//roots dub was terrible, it loses all the emotion and feel the japanese had, despite being translated quite well...

On the flip side, I actually like the Lucky Star dub, its a fairly good dub.

I'd say anything released though 4Kids entertainment would be the worst anime dub. If you compare the original subtitle and $kids version of Anything they have released you''ll find that they don't even translate the words. They actually. try to make their own story and dub it over the visuals of another. you may think I'm exaggerating, but I'm 100% serious. Go back to the subtitled version of your favorite 4Kids show and you'll see what I mean.

If your looking for something dubbed well I'd suggest something released by Funamation.

I typically don't watch dubs, although I'll watch a single episode (or as much as I can stand) here and there. Lucky star is the exception, I finished the series subbed, now I'm watching it dubbed.

I can tell you a really great Dub, which is Baccano!, which is much better than the original japanese dub (also more accurate to the setting, NYC and Chicago in the 1920s-1930s). It is the only anime where I recommend people skip the sub altogether.

I can also tell you the worst dub, well butchering, is the southern cross of macross.

Watching anime for years (like close to 25 years) I can tell you dubs were originally extremely awful in the 80s and nineties, something changed in the late nineties though. Lets say the post-evangelion era resulted in better dubs. Now I tend to pick and choose what I watch dubbed, and what I watch subbed. If the show has more of a euro-american flavor, such as Big-O, spice and wolf and Baccano!, etc I tend to prefer the dub. However if it leans more towards a japanese setting, definately the sub.

On top of that the voice actors have increased substancially in quality.

I watched Baccano! subbed at the anime club I'm apart of, it was pretty good, we showed the series over the course of the term as a continuing series, due to time, we skipped the OVAs though, which I'm going to have to watch now XD

I'm currently reading Yotsuba&! and can't help but think how terrible it would be as a dubbed anime...

Dang, I knew I wouldn't be the first to say it! QFT.

I can live with subs if the typical American dub comes out like this.

Nanoha

I swear, hearing her voice almost made me cry. It was so...eugh.

I...it almost made me stop watching. >.<

It makes her sound like some ditzy blonde than a smart nine year old.

Exactly!

The subbed version was good. The dub makes me think of britney spears on helium. >.<
