Who can remember, or who has heard of, some of the classic British public information films?

I watched "Apaches" on YouTube. It was very disturbing to watch, and it dealt with how to prevent farm accidents.

Yes Tim- Chip pan fires and damp towels- this public information film was actually very good simple advice and worked. Heard stories about people who ignored and threw burning chip pan out of kitchen window- probability of course comes into play and occasionally next door neighbor got equivalent of medieval anti-siege technique.

And let's not forget the most famous Monty Python spoof of PIFs--How Not to Be Seen.

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

They tend to be more intense than their American counterparts (PSAs--public service announcements), and much longer.

Can you remember what do do in case of nuclear attack? Think we had it at school, or maybe saw it later. Get under tables apparently, is how we survive a direct from a SS20. They were such good advice. Didn't say much about what to do after detonation though.

It was called Protect and Survive, right? Didn't the BBC keep it a secret to the public for years?

No protect and survive was in the public domain for years, also there was a leaflet by the same name on the same subject.

Wasn't there an American cartoon version for this shown in UK schools, or is this just a case of juvenile appcolyptitis? Got it really bad around age of 7 and might have imagined this. My imaginary friend cyborg kept me sane though by calmly explaining, sitting under table with me, not going to happen , yet. :D

In the 50s, we had the Duck and Cover videos.

Here is a link to the best collection I have found

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0xmSV6aq0g

The voice on the radio comments that a 66 kv shock has killed a boy. The interesting thing is that 66 kv is not a common voltage in the UK. Most power systems there are 240/415 v, 11 kv, 33 kv, 132 kv, 275 kv and 405 kv. most UK railways use about 22 kv AC overhead wires in the UK or 700 V DC third rails.

I have a two-disc DVD set containing around 300 PIFs. They cover many aspects of life in the UK. It is rather odd watching two hours of them all in one go, though!

We don't generally produce them any more but the DOE in Northern Ireland produces some rather good (read: powerful) ones these days.

We did get a whole spate of quite sophisticated government anti-alcohol /smoking/seat belt scare you into conformity stuff recently - seems to have declined a bit now , maybe they cost too much, and they don't want come over too much Big Brother with the forthcoming elections.

This one is a remake of an old film about the boy who broke into a substation to get his toy back. The modern one is more dramatic and the body count is higher.

Ohhh! What about the Bonfire Night horror stuff !

Seriously , what do you think will happen if you hold a cardboard tube full of primed, fused charge, put a naked flame to it and hold it in front of face whilst detonating.

Are Bangers banned now?
