Hey guys! I love to watch movies and collect DVDs. I was hoping you would be able to recommend some good ones to help me expand my list of favorites, and by extention my ever-growing DVD collection.

Types of Movies That Appeal to Me:

- Fantasy
Examples: Alice in Wonderland (2010), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands, Pirates of the Caribbean

- Musicals
Examples: Repo! The Genetic Opera, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Sweeney Todd

- Slice of Life
Examples: What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Benny & Joon

- Anything with a fairly dark atmosphere (for example, the works of Tim Burton)

- Anything with Johnny Depp as a main character

Of course, I do enjoy some movies that feature none of the aforementioned qualities I like, so your suggestion doesn't have to be within my guidelines.

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

My favorite musical id Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog.

Also if you like Black Comedies, Teeth is hilairiously disturbing and I swear you will have seen nothing like it.

Sounds to me like Disney movies would be right up your alley. Unless you've already seen them all.

Have you seen "No Such Thing"? It was directed by Hal Hartley and stars Sarah Polley. It's one of my favorite movies, I've seen it several times. It's a bit out there, and I would probably consider it a dark fantasy with a healthy dose of sarcastic wit (but that's just my opinion).

Here's the trailer:

If you like Johnny Depp, he's pretty good in the little seen Cry Baby, an offbeat John Waters teen comedy.

Also I might be one of the few people who think Nick Of Time is a taut thriller.

Fantasy: The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Chronicles of Narnia (i still haven't seen Prince Caspian), Alien Vs. Predator (even though it's a little more sci-fi)

Musicals: The Phantom of the Opera, RENT, West Side Story

some of my faves :)

I recommend you watch the movie The 10th Kingdom. It actually aired as a miniseries on NBC ten years ago but was also released on video. Put together the movie is six and a half hours long; uncut it is nearly seven hours. Don't let that deter you, though.

Your film preferences seem to be similar to mine so I highly recommend the 4 that Postures suggested, and I will add (as clickable links):

The City of Lost Children

Anything by director Jan Svankmajer, but especially Alice and Little Otik based on other movies you like. The following video has clips from those two and three others (Conspirators of Pleasure, Lunacy, and Faust), all of which are really great.

Not a movie, but the Danish mini-series Riget is quite strange and quite good. Although it's more horror-fantasy whereas the ones above are mostly just dark fantasy.

And finally, an offbeat musical, Reefer Madness:

Let me know if you like any of these because I can probably recommend a few more similar films.

Your taste in musicals sounds nicely offbeat.

You might want to look into "The American Astronaut" - a black and white, western sci-fi rock and roll musical.

Or "Forbidden Zone" This film has something to offend everybody. Really not suitable for work. Don't play this video if you are of a sensitive and easily offended nature.

And if you thought "The American Astronaut" and "Forbidden Zone" just were not weird enough:

Here is Guy Maddin's short film "The Heart of the World"

And as far as I'm concerned, Maddin's best film "Brand Upon The Brain"

(Many of Maddin's films are shot silent with only music, sound effects and narration.)
