Ascertaining Acting Work

I reside in Australia and I love acting work, however jobs in this field are low and selective, how many of you have a passion or dream for a full time/part time career in this field.

Any ideas as to how to get acting work as an aspie and where to find it?

Well, I do not work in the field, but I worked for several years in a university department where actors/theatre people trained at the advanced degree level.

You have to have either incredibly good (or otherwise striking) looks or you have to have incredible native talent. Or you have to have a very good friend or relative with connections to go very far. You can get by with the second quite better than the first - I live entirely too close to Hollywood and "incredibly good looking" people with perfect teeth, etc., are a dime a dozen up there. As far as serious actors go, talent even trumps who you know, in the long run.

Competition is incredibly fierce for actors. If you have no training, I would suggest you look at your local community theatres and see if you can volunteer there to see how things work. If you think you'd like acting, you could audition for smaller, background parts. Then keep your eyes open and see how it's done. Eventually, as you become known, you could audition for larger parts. Potentially, once you have enough credibility, there's the prospect of acting for an actual paycheck. Networking in vitally important. Be sure you have a day job, though. It takes time.

You might also find you prefer the technical side of theatre (state managing, house managing, costuming, scenic design/construction, costumes, lighting, sound, etc.).
