I've been coming across Firefly and Firefly-related media more often lately, including several fan films in the works, and it's gotten me back into working on a sci-fi TV series of my own, inspired in part by Firefly. Right now, the probably-permanent title I've given what I'm working on is New Zero.

Set in the early thirty-first century in another solar system, it focuses on a space-faring crew of six mercenaries/bounty hunters who come into possession of a cache of items belonging to a sociopolitical visionary who led a nearly-successful solar-system-wide revolution, one hundred and fifty years before the story takes place. Learning of the existence of the items, as well as the crew that has them, the ruling Alliance government decides to track down the crew and destroy the items at all costs, fearing they could be used to incite another revolution. The main story follows the crew as they try to make a living, stay ahead of the Alliance, and end up discovering long-buried secrets of the revolution.

It would be somewhat darker and more violent than Firefly, though, with tones and themes somewhat more akin to Battlestar Galactica (less space-western, more gritty 'idustrial' sci-fi) but that's not to say that it wouldn't be without its lighter elements. And on top of just the basic ideas and stuff, I've already put a large amount of work into planning the whole thing out, with a series bible in the works, which includes extensive information and background on the show's characters, places, events, institutions, and whatnot, as well as its story/episode structure.

I would love to see the show make it to TV one day; that's my big goal, along with seeing another major sci-fi project of mine, Type III, make it to the big screen, too.

But I know it's a long-shot, and an even longer one for me, seeing as I'm still in college, and have AS; going into an industry where it's about who you know, just as much as, if not more than, what you know.

So, what do you think? Would you watch it, if it ever got produced?

In an industry like that, 95% of people bomb out because they don't want it enough, or usually because they want it for the wrong reasons, like money and fame. The other 5 percent that do want it, 95% of them don't get their big break, which is equal parts luck and skill (I guess, I'm at the first stage now, and I'm in the upper 5 percent) and a whole hell of a lot of persistence and stubbornness. You will get shot down a million times before you get a break, so if this is something you really want, you need to come up with 100 ideas for a pilot, and maybe 1 will get accepted if you are lucky, and if you are really lucky, it will be more than just a pilot.

That's nothing new to me. I'm well aware of the effort I need to put in to get anywhere. I wouldn't be in college for film-making if I didn't take the whole thing seriously, and spend a lot of time generating and refining story ideas that I think would have more than just the basic entertainment potential.
