I prefer Green Lantern and independent titles, but:
Year One
The Long Halloween
The Dark Knight Returns

I'd suggest against The Killing Joke, it may be by Alan Moore but even he's said he doesn't like it.

I'd suggest Batwoman too, for the amazing artwork alone (one graphic novel out now, the ongoing series starts in a few months).

Three DC Universe event titles that include Batman:
Infinite Crisis (one volume)
52 (four volumes, almost no Batman, but sets up a lot for the Batwoman series)
Final Crisis (one volume)

I really like Grant Morrison's run.

Here is the order
Batman & Son
The Black Glove
Batman R.I.P.
Final Crisis
Time and the Batman
Batman & Robin Volume 1
Batman & Robin Volume 2
Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne

Gotta agree with this but also throw in Long Halloween, Arkham Asylum, The Man Who Laughs, and Killing Joke.

This is tough.

Hush
The Killing Joke
The Dark Knight Returns
Year One
Batman R.I.P.
The No Man's Land arc
The general Cataclysm arc

That's all I can think of. I think Hush should definitely be on any list of the best Batman stories.

Hush certainly has become one of the most interesting villains. He's had a big role in the recent Streets of Gotham series...which if you haven't checked that out, it just finished so the trade should be due out in a year. :p

Or you can just download the whole thing if you're inclined to find such things.
