I've known about this for a while and I've been looking forward to its release. But they've finally decided on the release date (5th August) so I thought I'd mention it. The new film is called "The rise of the planet of the apes" and it's a prequel showing how the apes took over in the first place. The main reason I'm looking forward to this is because the special effects company that made Avatar have made this and I just like the idea of CGI talking apes.
And there has been a sneak peek clip of what one of the characters looks like, only a 4 second clip of him looking to the side but it has got me so excited. The character design is awesome and the realism is pretty cool too, of course it isn't perfect (eyes are too white, face is a bit flat/humanlike) but apart from that it's pretty amazing. There is more to be revealed on Wednesday, ooh can't wait to see what the Orangutans will look like.
I don't actually like the earlier films, partly because they're kind of boring but mostly because the characters look a bit crappy. Some of the apes in the 2001 version looked nothing like apes and that Helena Bonham Carter's costume looked like a chimpy Michael Jackson. And the 1968 one is just WTF (I do understand the special effects were limited back then but still.)
Call me shallow/superficial or whatever, but the only real reason I am looking forward to the latest instalment so much is the up to date and realistic CGI, I don't expect the film itself to be super amazing (I am hoping to be pleasantly surprised) since I don't even like the other Planet Of The Apes.

So, anyone else planning to see this film this summer?

I think I will, I am quite a fan of the previous ones as well though.

Also, yes, Helena Bonham Carter's costume did look a lot like Michael Jackson.

Only 4 seconds! Nevertheless, that monkey looked amazing!

That does look good. I'll definitely watch that, although I can't deal with cinemas so it'll be when it comes onto Sky.

Monkeys! Monkeys! Monkeys! I mean apes! Wait, apes are still monkeys. Monkeys! Monkeys! Monkeys!

They still look a bit too human in my opinion, but god damn it they're close enough. Freaking monkeys! Whoo!

i hope it hews close to the original conception for the first planet of the apes, which was to have the apes living and interacting technologically in an environment of technological cast-offs of the previously dominant humans. it would be interesting to see apes using cell phones and PCs and driving cars and such.

That movie looks awesome! I'll probably wait until it comes out on DVD to watch it. It will probably scare the crap out of my younger brother, since he has this weird fear (not really a phobia though) of apes running rampant.

I love Helena Bonham Carter. I haven't seen Planet of the Apes but I kind of don't want to, since I feel her best roles were in Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland, both of which I've seen multiple times. Trivia fact: she started dating Tim Burton when they worked together on the 2001 version of Planet of the Apes, and they've been together ever since. :D

*ahem* Sorry for spamming one of my special interests.

That always makes me wonder, did Tim Burton become attracted to her while in costume??? Because she would have been made up almost constantly on set.

I think it would be quite hard to make the chimps look really chimpy because the actors are humans. But yeah it's still pretty damn realistic!

Technically, the film is a loose remake of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (the fourth film in the original series), since it shows how the Apes came to rule the planet.

If there is one thing I have to say about the trailer, it is that James Franco does not at all look convincing as a scientist.
