So does this drive anyone else insane? Music going on in films ALL THE TIME, over conversations and details and stuff? AmIright?

It's funny, early sound films had no music, because filmmakers didn't think audiences would accept it unless it had a reason to be there, like when the characters are listening to music. That's why the only music heard in Dracula (1931) is when the characters attend an opera.

Personally, it only annoys me when I feel like the filmmakers think I'm too stupid to know how to feel during a scene and use music to tell me, or when horror films use loud and abrupt music to get a cheap scare instead of using skillful filmmaking to create a disturbing atmosphere. Music should enhance scenes in a subtle way.

YouAreRight. Except when it is part of the artistic tableau, in which case it makes the movie more beautiful.

There are some movie scenes, though, where music is an absolute must, or else the scene would be lacking an emotional punch. One example being the climax of Seven, in which the rising tension would have been impossible without the building dramatic music leading up to the Brad Pitt shooting Kevin Spacey, while Morgan Freeman lets it happen.

Well, as that the film is now a few years old, has been available on DVD for some time, and has been played to death on TV, I'm pretty sure that everyone has seen it already.

Indeed, music can be annoying when it is played over dialogue. But I also agree that there are times when there must be music. Like this.

P.S. does anybody know what film if any this is on?
