Anyone seen the Red Violin? I'm usually not a period flick type of guy at all, but it was well done and entertaining. It tells the story of a violin made by an Italian man in the 1600s and where it ends up from there and on, leading to modern day (late 90s) at an auction. Not many known actors in it besides Samuel L. Jackson and he's just in it for a little while. Subtitles required though.

I Netflixed it not too long ago. I thought it was really well done. It was one of those stories which must've looked complicated in script-form, but it worked very well. As for Sam Jackson, probably the best dramatic role I've seen him in. (given that the list of those isn't very long)
