Blu Rays are too loud
I was watching Star Wars Episodes 1 and 2 on blu ray for the first time today and I couldn't be more satisfied. The picture was so clear, it was almost like watching them for the first time, but there is only one slight problem, the audio. Sometimes it's too loud when all the battles are going on so I have to turn it down a little slightly but when the battles are over the whole dialouge stuff is a little quieter. I want the movies too be loud enough to hear the battles and dialouge on the same volume but not too loud as it is kinda sensative on my ear lobes. I have a Phillips Blu ray player and a 24 inch bush HD tv and I've been going on the menus and stuff to try and get it right but I can't slightly do it right so I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to do thank you.
I don't know that there's anything you can do, other than just keep the remote handy. The soundtrack is mixed to be heard in large theatres where all those zooms and explosions are supposed to be extra loud, so you feel like you're really in the battle. Unfortunately, in a regular sized house they're just too loud compared to the level of dialogue scenes and no amount of electronic audio leveling will completely even them out.
I live in an apartment and I have to jockey the audio levels on discs like that to avoid blasting my neighbors out of their beds at night.
The most annoying thing I have noticed on Blu Ray discs is often the volume level of the soundtrack is considerably lower than the audio on the menu, so when the film ends and you go back to the main menu, its suddenly deafeningly loud. ![]()
I think this is one of the reasons why I don't bother watching films anymore, I can't be bothered fiddling with the volume to hear the dialogue and not be deafened by the noise. You'd think they'd be able to stream dialogue, music and fx separately by now, then you could mix them to taste.

My room is quite small, I guess if it was the size off a living room then it would be quite different. Today I was watching Episode III and I always love to watch that delightful film but I couldn't enjoy it very much because I kept fiddling wit h the menu button on the tv remote to sort out the audio and I just can't get it right. I can feel the vibrations in my ear lobes. I want it to be loud but not loud enough so that I can feel those vibrations. I really do hope a solution presents itself. Maybe it's just the Star Wars films because there like dolby digital and THX or something. Maybe with other films on Blu Ray, it won't be so bad.
I think loud sound systems and audio transfers are overrated. I've never understood the concept of someone blasting audio really loud (unless they were in a public place with a lot of people). I'm happy with just hearing what's going on. I couldn't care less if it was in THX Dolby 1080 digital or whatever.
At least with home video, you can adjust the volume and any other setting to make the viewing more comfortable. The one thing I really have a problem with sound-wise is movie trailers in the theater. They always play them at full blast, louder than the actual movie sometimes. Even the trailers for arthouse dramas are blasted out like a Michael Bay explosion. What doesn't help is the fact that I really can't see the point of in-theater trailers anymore since they're all on the Internet these days. When I go to the theater, I usually go to the bathroom or just wait outside the doors until the trailers are over.
