So, recently I became the proud owner of a PS3 and the game Red Dead Redemption.

RDR is a great game that reminds me how much I love westerns from the 60s and 70s…

The characters design and art direction of the game calls to mind my favorite Sergio Leone movies: Fist Full of Dollars, Once Upon a Time in the West— Charles Bronson could be John Marston and Jason Robards could be Marshal Leigh Johnson.

And the setting and themes—Mexican border country at the turn of the last century, and a tale about bad men who are literally out of time—definitely owes something to Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch.

The game is a testament to the influence of both these directors who redefined the genre:

Sergio Leone, with titles such as, The Fist Full of Dollars trilogy, Once Upon a Time in the West, and Duck, You Sucker.

And

Sam Peckinpah with, The Wild Bunch, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and even Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia

So, who makes the better western, Sergio Leone or Sam Peckinpah?

Don't forget Straw Dogs, which is almost a British western...

The only movie I've seen by either was Leone's "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," which was pretty darn amazing.

Kurosawa's phallic symbols are a bit too obvious for my taste.....

Looking back at my OP, I think Marston looks more like Clint Eastwood from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, than Charles Bronson from Once Upon a Time in the West...

Also. to answer my own question, I think I'll give the edge to Leone because he picked Ennio Morricone to score his flicks....

His movies have better trailers too.

I like most Peckinpah movies, but I chose Leone... Although when it comes to Westerns, I like Anthony Mann, and especially John Ford!

It was a damn close one for me, but I have to go with Peckinpah. The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly is a fantastic film, but The Wild Bunch is one of my favorite all time movies.
Peckinpah's Cross Of Iron is also one of my all time favorite war movies, too.
