Who here has seen this Japanese animated show? I've actually never watched a single episode but I've heard a lot about it from my friend who's giving me volume 1 on DVD for X-mas.

I'm kind of excited because this will offically be the first anime that I ever owned on DVD, and from what I've read about it I have a feeling I'll probably like this show. I just want to know what other people think of it?

Yeah Azumanga Daioh is good, when I was first going to watch it I did not think I would like it much because I was told most of its comedy was from the personalities of the characters, and I did not think them too funny at first. But it really is funny, I was really happy when I managed to find a box set of the series, I also cried at the end of the series when the characters graduate, just because it ended.

Yeah I get sad when a show I really like ends too, so much that I never enjoy watching the last episode. :(

Funny series. I don't have the DVD, but I have the manga omnibus. :)

It's really a great show. Osaka is my favorite character. Go Team Sea Slug! 8)

One thing I like about this anime is that the characters are all drawn with normal hair and eye colors for Japanese girls. I know that may sound kind of shallow but I get tired of all the anime characters that get drawn with unrealistic funky hair colors and hairstyles, it's nice every now and then to see characters who look realistic. I also feel the same with Pet Shop of Horrors which is set in the US and features American characters with normal blonde hair and blue eyes.

Speaking of which I sooo want to get that anime on DVD some day. I'm hoping my Mom will stick to her promise of paying me an allowance eventually so I can save enough to order it off Rightstuf.com, that and Azumanga Daioh will make awesome anime to add to my DVD collection. :)

I'm really excited right now because I think my friend may be mailing the DVD to me either today or some time soon. :bounce:

I'm hoping I can appreciate the show with just the first 5 episodes on my DVD, I don't know if I really want to hunt down all 6 volumes. I guess maybe I can try watching the rest of the episodes on YouTube or something just to see how the show ends, but it will be after I watch the first 5 episodes on DVD. I know it's weird but I don't like owning every episode of a TV show on DVD, I like having only a few or several episodes on one or two discs that way it doesn't take up so much room on my shelf where I keep my DVDs. So having just volume 1 of Azumanga Daioh on my shelf should be fine for me. :)

st remembered that one of the great things about the Azumanga Daioh DVDs was that they came with a little booklet that included translator notes on bits of culture that appear in the series, on things like accents, food, etc,

Honestly even though I'm a guy, I've always been more into shojo (girl) anime than I was shounen (guy) anime. Shojo appeals to me more I guess because of the lightheartedness, I really can't stand all the gory violence and cynicism of the shounen genre.

OK I finally got my copy of Azumanga Daioh volume 1 DVD from my friend. So yay me! :D

I watched the first episode and it actually was really cute and silly. I think my favorite character is going to be Osaka because I can sort of relate to her, The city of Osaka seems to be the Japanese equivalent of the Deep South here in the US and just like her being expected to have an Osakan accent, I don't really have a southern accent despite the fact that I was born and raised in Georgia, and in school everybody thought I was from another state because I didn't talk with a deep southern accent like everyone else did. It was kind of funny when Osaka introduced herself in class and everyone including her own teacher was forcing her to talk with an accent and asking her about the weird customs in Osaka when she tried to explain that not everyone from Osaka was like that, and then she ended up with the nickname Osaka. :P

Chances are that you don't even remember the name Ayumu Kasuga through the series. A lot of people on her theorise that she AS or something, so easily relatable to us.
