I used to just call it Star Wars, but now I feel the need for distinction.

It's always been just plain ol "Star Wars" to me since I first saw it in 1977.

It is Episode 4: A New Hope, or even just episode 4. Don't know why I would just call it the name of the series since there are six movies of the main series, 3 of which existed since before I was born.

I call it Star Wars. And when I need to distinguish it from Empire and Jedi, I go the controversial route and call it "Star Wars 1"!

IMO the name 'Star Wars' adequately captures what the 1977 movie is about. It can stand alone as a movie, too. Empire and Jedi are just bonuses.

For me, "Star Wars", "The Empire Strikes back" & "Return of the Jedi" existed as 3 distinct movie titles for 20 years before people started to refer to them by episode number.
