Has anyone experienced this? I did twice when I see "Avatar" and "Red Tails", which I both thought were crap.

I have started the clapping 2 or 3 times as a joke

I've only encountered this in screenings or some special event. Seems kind of pointless to applaud for the projectionist or the automation software that runs the projectors.

I've seen it happen several times. Personally, I really don't care for it. But then again, I've never been one to physically express myself if I like or appreciate something that's not live (like a film).

The only movies I clapped for was the Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition in 1997. Up until that I had forgotten what it was like to watch Star Wars on the big screen and for years had to watch it on the small screen.

I even remember the theater clapped for this trailer!

I clapped at the end of The King's Speech.

I experienced it twice, earlier this month when I visited the International Film Festival in Rotterdam. So I guess it kind of makes sense for an audience that visits a movie by an independent (foreign) director.

At first, I also thought it was strange to be clapping, kind of entering an "uncanny valley", exactly because it's strange to applaud for a projector and neither the actors nor the director can hear it. But I just went with it, and it felt good.

I never saw this at any of our local cinemas showing Hollywood movies, though.

I've never clapped at the end of a movie nor do I recall anyone else clapping, but I come from England so it might be treated a little different. If memory serves my sister once told me people clapped at the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Haloows Part II, though it was it's first midnight showing.

During one of the three times when I saw "Return Of The Jedi" as a kid, the whole audience erupted in applause when Darth Vader had thrown the Emperor down the reactor shaft (which, come to think of it, is a very odd thing to have in your throne room).

Stands in his chair and yells, "I'm the king of the world!!"

Also, I think that there has been clapping in theaters I've been in, but I can't say for sure. And clapping is fun so I hope there was.

Clapping at movies is FUN! I went with friends to see "Free Willy". Near the end I started yelling
and cheering for "Willy's" final escape. Within seconds the whole crowd was cheering and yelling
"GO WILLY!! !" When he made it, I led the crowd in a standing ovation. It was a wonderful experiment in group dynamics.

When I was 8 I clapped and shouted for the title card of Revenge of the Sith, and so did the rest of the theater. My sister also started the theater clapping at the end of Sherlock Holmes 2.

Oh yeah, and the theater was in uproar at the end of LOTR: Return of the King.

I think it's just a way for people to show their agreement that they all really liked the movie. I think it's more an instance of people clapping (about the movie) for each other to hear and agree with than for the actual people involved in the movie.
