Diane Reim on NPR had a discussion with some other people of the book , "the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". They brought up the fact that Lisbeth was probably an Aspie. What's you people's take on that? (Loner, non-social, didn't say much, little 'theory of mind', deep involvement with computers)

In a real world situation, I wonder how many of her AS traits actually stem from environmental influence. Probably most of them.

Only seen the (English-language) movie but if it was faithful to the book, definitely Aspie. I can think of zero film portrayals I've related to more than Lisbeth as played by Rooney Mara and I didn't even specifically relate to the computer expertise or gothic style, etc. Just the details like how she ate like a little animal in front of the computer, and her guileless but deep relational style - the fact she called what's-his-name a friend rather than business partner or guy she was sleeping with and meant it with all her heart. Not sure if those things were in the book. But hundreds of little details like this. Things you very rarely see acted on a screen. I LOVED this movie.

I hope so - we need as many positive characters in real life and fiction as possible.
Yeah, I know, Lispeth isn't always a positive role model, but she's far from being the most negative.

I finally saw the movie. Good but not great overall, though if I hadn't read the book I am not sure if I would have followed the transitions. There were a few changes in plot that I thought didn't detract from the movie.

The movie is more about abusive behavior than it is thriller. I thought Rooney did a good job of conveying intensity without ever showing emotion in her voice or her actions. Her Lisbeth character carries the movie much like the book. The action is rather minimal but harsh when it does happen. I didn't really care much for Craig's performance. Personally, I thought most the movie outside of Lisbeth story was rather superficially done. I think the next two movies should be more story driven as they were in the books and I look forward to them.

As for Lisbeth having Aspergers, I don't know. She talks in a montone, doesn't communicate but talks at people, has a black and white sense of justice which are all parts of autism. But she is also drawn to be animalistic and impulsive like a dog that has been chained up all its life.

Movie has rape and adult oriented scenes that should probably keep people away that are offended by those type of scenes.

I was kind of thinking the same thing when I saw the film (which is good BTW). However, Lisbeth has a fairly reasonable backstory which would explain her lifestyle and her actions. The American version didn't exactly dwell on this too much, but the Swedish films and books did. So while Lisbeth certainly comes across as an aspie to the casual onlooker who's in the know, her exposition points toward another possibility towards explaining how she is who she is.

Same here! :D Though I want to read the book and its sequels before I watch the film versions. I ordered the first book online a couple of days go, and I'm very impatient for it to get here.

I first decided to check out this series because when I saw pictures of Lisbeth (the version played by Rooney Mara), she reminded me a lot of a female Edward Scissorhands (who, coincidentally, is also suspected of having AS traits). Is that too shallow of a reason to want to check out this series? Well, in any case, I hope that the Millenium Trilogy carries more weight to it than just Lisbeth's alluring goth appearance. I have fairly high expectations for it.

Watch the Swedish one first. To me at least the Swedish one is more Aspie-ish

Yes, it mentions that she has Asperger's in the book.

Atypically, I saw the remake, not the original, but I've heard that the original film conveys Lisbeth's Aspie traits a bit more. However, I really enjoyed Fincher's film. The book was really good, right up until the end...I ended up losing interest and didn't finish it, because I didn't care for the very end of the movie, either.

I thought Lisbeth in the remake had a more androgynous, underfed look about her.
