What do you consider the most underrated movies ever? Think of this thread as the counterpart to the thread about overrated movies.

Carnival of Souls (1962)

With a budget of just $33,000, Carnival of Souls is now one of The Criterion Collection films on DVD (other edited versions of the film are available for about $1, but the Criterion Collection version ( http://www.amazon.com/Carnival-Criterio ... 1559409002 ) is the restored version after many drive-in theaters chopped scene after scene from the film to allow time for an extra screening at midnight). This is the horror classic that set the cinematographical standard for decades after.

I agree about Nightcrawler. I thought it was surprisingly good, though the ending seemed a bit light, but I would maybe change my mind on another viewing.

Zodiac is one of my favorite movies ever, and I didn't understand why people were so indifferent to it when it came out. It think many wanted a structured slasher film, and were disappointed that all the killing is over in about 30 minutes and the movie is about the effects of murder on communities. Brilliant film.

I too second your thoughts on Zodiac. I thought it was a great movie, but I didn't understand why people were so disappointed as to the movie being more about the lead character {played well by Jake Gyllenhaal} being obsessed with bringing Zodiac to justice. I myself own a copy of the book written by the real Robert Graysmith that was the basis for the movie and it is just as interesting as the movie.

Well maybe it is not the most underrated.

I actually own Spider Baby. For me, it stands out because it's the final movie of the late, great Lon Chaney Jr.

I also own and love Spider Baby.

A lot of these are underrated simply because they're from other countries...or decades.

^^ I agree with "Big Trouble in Little China"----but, "The Fisher King" was just..... I LOVED Robin Williams (STILL do), but he was WAAAAAAY over-the-top, IMO----even, for HIM!

One of my most favorite, underrated movies, is "Dead Again" (Emma Thompson & Kenneth Branagh [when they were married, IRL, to each other----Kenneth's character has an American accent], Robin Williams [plays a psychologist, and meets with people in a grocery freezer], Derek Jacobi [LOVE him----he's been in so many good things], Andy Garcia).

Emma Thompson's character has amnesia, gets hypnotized to aid in her recovery----then, what comes next..... Well, let's just say it's filled with ALOT of twists and turns, and just when you think you know EXACTLY what's gonna come next, you WON'T know!
