Guardians of the Galaxy
It's just been announced that Marvel Studios is making a film of the title above and will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, home of the recent Avengers movie and it's before solo movies. It'll feature Thanos who appeared in the post credits scene from The Avengers, but here is my question. WHO ARE THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY?
I just went on wikipedia to find out and there's a list of heroes of unknown origins. They say Nova will be in the movie. Also I read this a comicbookmovie.com and they showed a picture of the comic book and one of the characters was the Silver Surfer. If he's gonna be in the movie then my day is made.
I'm not the best one to answer this, but the main jist is that there have been various incarnations of this superhero team throughout the publication history of Marvel Comics, two of which are the most famous:
The first is a team consisting of Vance Astro, Charlie 27, Martinex, Yondu, and Starhawk. They appeared in the seventies, and I've honestly only seen them as guest stars in a storyline of Avengers.
The other popular team was formed quite recently, and initially consisted of Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Mantis, Quasar, Drax, Adam Warlock, and Gamora (all previously established Marvel characters). I read this series, and it sort of tells the story of the formation of this team as the FIRST Guardians of the Galaxy, who would later inspire the heroes of the 70s series, whose story took place in the distant future (though they time-travelled at certain points).
What I understand from the rumours, is that a possible Guardians movie would feature the Star-Lord team, not the Vance Astro team. I find this a bit of a pity, as in my opinion, the team with Starhawk and Vance Astro has a more iconic look, feel, and theme than Star-Lord's theme, which is basically a d-list Marvel cosmic heroes form the Dirty Dozen. It was a good enough comic, though, I loved it to bits, but I don't think it merits its own movie.

Well, the problem with the Vance Astro team is that in main Marvel continuity, young Mr. Astrovik has already discovered his telekinetic powers, and begun working with the Avengers as Justice. Vance Astro, on the other hand, was cryogenically suspended during an experimental deep-space mission and didn't get his powers until he was unfrozen several centuries later.
Besides, given that the movie audiences will need an intro to the characters, it's a lot easier to just tie it into the existing franchises by using the modern-day team of Guardians. Wonder if Rocket Raccoon will be on the team.. ?

^Deacon, have you seen the episode of 'Avengers EMH' that featured the Guardians? The episode was called 'Michael Korvac'. It featured Starlord, Groot, Rocket, Phyla, and Warlock. For some reason, Rocket had an Australian accent in that cartoon (I always imagined him sounding more New-Yorky).
I imagine they would include Rocket. He's the Guardians' main selling point! I just wonder who they're going to pick; it's curious that they decided to include Phyla in the cartoon, considering she died in the comic books. I haven't read 'Avengers Assemble' #4, as according to Wikipedia, the Guardians reformed with Drax on the team, when I thought Drax died in Thanos Imperative.
