i read that clint eastwood was not the first choice to play dirty harry, but that paul newman, frank sinatra, john wayne and steve mcqueen were first asked. anybody here care to imagine how the film would've turned out had any of those other actors played dirty harry callahan? anybody willing to imagine any other actors not listed, such as truman capote, gene shalit [who is the spit and image of inspector dave toschi who was the inspiration for the dirty harry character], ernest borgnine? i'd like to hear everybody's alternate choices, that should be fun :)

No. Your topic made me immediately panic that they were remaking the Dirty Harry movies.

Hope I didn't jinx us.

Yes, for a minute there I thought the same thing.

Anyway, no. Some characters are not meant to be portrayed by anybody else.

I think Lance Henrikson would have been an acceptable substitute in my opinion, but to me, Clint Eastwood IS dirty Harry as much as Chuck Norris IS Walker, Texas Ranger.

Had they had done Dirty Harry in the 60s, only then would I concede that Paul Newman would've been good in that role. But between the fact that Newman was starting to tone his roles down in the 70s and that Eastwood was what Newman was in the 60s (with more social angst to play with), I can't picture anyone other than Eastwood in that role.

Lance Hnrikson is a very plausable alternative. Had the idea occured sooner, Humphrey Bogart could have done it. Jack Palance could have been Dirty Harry. It is a fairly short hop from Atilla the Hun to Dirty Harry Calahan. Lee Van Cleer could have done it. He could play a very plausible bad-ass.

I'd love to see Woody Allen as Dirty Harry.

After seeing Rutger Hauer in Hobo With a Shotgun, I'd say he has both the dirtiness and the gun handling ability....

I’m not sure how Hairy he can be.

Why not? He played James Bond in a movie.

I kid you not. See: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061452/

woody the jazz clarinetist might've been a little cerebral for the role, which would have made it a different picture for sure.

As every movie ever made is now being remade, who is going to play the next Dirty Harry?

I'm a big Star Trek fan, so I liked how Andy Robinson(Garak-DS9) played "The Scorpio Killer" in Dirty Harry. The two characters also have similar personalities.
