My family and I plan to see this film this weekend for my birthday. I had no idea that it was based on a book. I don't read books that much if hardly, but I still wanna see this movie. A lot of my Favourite films are based on books I've never read or ever will e.g. Die Hard, Jurassic Park, Jaws, the LOTR trilogy etc. I was just wondering of anyone else will be seeing the film without reading this book. Even if I do end up really loving this film I probably wouldn't read the book anyway. I'm just not really a book type person except for maybe some comics and graphic novels but they're easy to read. I'm more of a visualist as in watching films and tv shows but mostly films. Does that make me lazy or dumb? If it does then I sorry but that's just who I am. I mean I am an aspie so maybe that's the reason.

I've never read the book myself, but I intend on seeing this on opening weekend.

At a screening it had in Toronto, many said that it will be an Oscar contender.

I've considered picking up the book but I've been told by at least half a dozen people that it's awful. I've got an undiagnosed reading/learning disorder that makes words appear as gibberish and makes me read every sentence five or six times before it sinks in, so I have to be choosy with what I spend my time and effort reading. I'd rather just wait for the movie instead, especially since Ridley Scott is by far my favorite director.

I will see the movie first but the martian book is highly praised. It would probably have won the hugo and nebula awards if it had not been self published.
