It's possible this might be known by fans so I don't know but at the end of Part II that lightning storm sends Doc Brown back to 1885 and leaves the Deloreon buried for Marty. The 1955 Doc Brown helps Marty to find it and they discover the Doc's Tombstone. So instead of going back to 1985 Marty goes to 1885 to prevent the Doc's death. Where is the plot hole in this? Well wouldn't it have made more sense for the 1955 Doc Brown to prevent his own death by not hovering the Deloreon during the thunderstorm in the future instead of Marty going back in time? I mean Marty saw the 1985 Doc disappear so he could have told 1955 Doc what to do when the time eventually came and I know about the whole you shouldn't tell him his future as it could have consequences but then again he did help Marty to go back and save him.

Time travel in general causes plot holes cause its unrealistic that nothing would remain the same when traveling throughout time. The only way time travel would make sense is if you could go back but not interact with anything and since thats makes for a boring movie, no one has done this. I think in order to enjoy things like back to the future and terminator you have to accept some plot holes.

or as some literary person of old said, one must engage a willful suspension of disbelief.

I like the way Back to the Future predicts 9/11 and the directors film of 30 years later, "The Walk"

I already knew about that one, I figure they just did it to set up the 3rd one. The most realistic portrayal of time-travel I have come across is the anime Steins;Gate, but I never got through it, I just got confused. I think if they made fictional time-travel realistic it would be way too confusing for audiences.
