So who likes this show? I bought the DVD box-set of the first season yesterday, since a workmate had said it was probably my sort of show, and watched the first two episodes last night, back-to back.

And... I really enjoyed them. Anna Paquin was great as Sookie (although why she didn't channel the great Southern accent she does here when she was playing Rogue in the X-Men movies, I'll never know), and the way the whole "vampires are coming 'out of the coffin' but people still fear them" scenario was brilliantly done. The sizzling chemistry between Sookie & Bill totally eclipsed the Buffy/Angel pairing (well, I had to make the comparison between this show and Buffy sooner or later, right?), and gave the show a really sexy edge to it.

Plus, Bill could so beat the living daylights out of that pale emo poser Edward. Take that, Twilight! :P

I'm looking forward to finishing the box-set ASAP and then setting about watching the start of season two when it starts here in Blighty on Friday night...

I watched the first season and liked it although I think it was a bit over the top when it came to certain things...

I have not seen the show yet. I did read the books and thought they were hilarious, and sometimes mildly sexy. I did not think I would like them... Southern Vampires??? I was glad I stuck it out and finished reading the first book though because I actually did enjoy the series.

Yes, I must admit I did a double-take when the first sex-scene happened. It was very... vigorous, for something being shown on syndicated television.

That being said, as far as I'm concerned, the smouldering relationship between Bill & Sookie is, so far, much more interesting to watch than the actual rutting. Although that may have something to do with the fact that Sookie's brother - who seems to be doing most of the rutting so far - is a bit of a fool :P

I didn't know they were based on books until I caught the "based on" message in the opening credits. I may have to search them out...

They have been out for a while, it would probably be easy to find them at the library if you wanted to see if you like them before buying. Even my small town library has them, I recently checked because I was thinking about reading them again.

I love True Blood, it's very high on my list of favourite current television shows. After watching the first two seasons I thought I'd check out the books and while they were okay, I thought the show told the story a lot better. When I got to the end of the second book I was totally addicted to the characters and wanted to know what was going to happen next, but in the end I couldn't bring myself to keep reading for fear that it would spoil key plot elements in the show. This is the only time I've ever liked the movie/show more than the book. The books are decent though, and I'll continue reading them after the season they correspond with has aired, or when the show gets cancelled, or if I hear that the show has moved away from the story in the books.

I have been a fan of the True Blood series for some time. Alan Ball is an excellent writer from what I've seen of his work so far. The only stinker he's produced thus far has been last year's Towelhead. The casting of the show is also uniformly excellent.

I saw a £40 box-set of all the books in Waterstone's the other day - so being the impulse buyer I am, I bought it. We'll see if I end up selling them on eBay, I guess :)

I suspect I'll be the same way, since I've seen the show first. The girl selling me the books said that they have been highly popular since the show came out, but also told me flat-out that the show and the books are not exactly the same as each other (probably so that I wouldn't be disappointed with the compromises the show's makers have probably had to make). I'm sure I'll cope, as long as I can get my regular dose of Anna Paquin on the TV screen :)

In the meantime, though, I'm ploughing my way through the series as fast as I can - I've just reached the episode where Jason meets that freaky hippy girl who likes to snort vampire blood, and it looks like Bill & his vampire "friends" have been blown up. Can't wait to watch more...

I've seen the show, it's pretty good. But I was drawn to it because I'd heard about the premise being that vampires had come out into the open. I was looking forward to seeing how that would play out and the first season did not dissapoint. The second was slightly less satisfying, as it seems they're taking a different direction, going more for a general supernatural tone, rather than focusing on human-vampire interaction.

I'll refrain judgement for now, as I still liked the second season a lot.

The second season starts here in the UK on Friday, and I'm chewing my fingernails waiting for it. A more general supernatural tone sounds interesting, but I hope it won't end up ploughing the same furrow as Buffy did back in the day. Given the lack of wisecracks in the first season, I suspect I won't be disappointed...

So I watched the first episode of the second season last night, and I was duly impressed - so much so that the hour-long episode felt like it only lasted twenty minutes. Jessica, that new vampire Bill had to create at the end of the last season, is already proving to be an annoying, spoilt little brat with all her "Boo hoo, I hate Tru Blood! Give me something real! Wah wah wah, you're the worst maker ever!" whinging. Poor old Bill.

Not surprised Sookie gave away that inheritance money, though - if I got given money by my creepy old kiddie-fiddler of a great-uncle, I'd be unwilling to take it, too.

Good start to what's hopefully going to be an awesome season. Now all I have to do is sit on my hands and wait for next Friday... :(

ooh I hate that! I did the same thing with Doctor Who because I didn't start watching it until the 4th series was halfway over. So I watched all of the first 4 series in rapid succession and then when I was all caught up I was left waiting 7 whole days at a time to get more of my DW fix! And then of course after a few weeks of that I was left waiting 2-3 months at a time for the next episode. I hate the waiting, especially since recently I've been catching up on all the great British shows I never got to watch having grown up unaware of their existence, so I'm used to having all the episodes to watch all at once.

I'm glad you're enjoying True Blood! I don't think you'll be disappointed with season 2, it's worth the wait. I agree it feels over too quickly. After waiting for a week you want the new episode to last at least 4 hours.

I was like that with Dr Who as well - 2009 didn't even have a real season in it (just a few specials, including the Tenth Doctor's regeneration), a state of affairs which really sucked. Still, this year should be different. Hopefully.

I agree - it's really frustrating to have to twiddle your thumbs for a week. I think I probably spoiled things for myself by burning through the True Blood season 1 box-set as quickly as I could in preparation for the start of season 2 - but then again I suppose I kinda had to, otherwise I'd have been watching two series simultaneously, which would have been very confusing :)

Too true. Admittedly I was watching it on Sky+, so I was able to fast-forward through the ad breaks (when they weren't broken up by cast & crew interviews, that is), but the episode still felt like it had whizzed past, leaving me forlorn and needy at the end of it. It doesn't help that I totally need an Anna Paquin fix every week, either :P

I liked the 1st Season, but the last season is losing its appeal. It was better as close-knit personal relationship stories. Now the global vampire war concept is a direction I am not so interested in. Bill is the new vampire god? It seems like a ridiculous story.

As I don't get HBO, I'm lucky when I can see it on dvd, or on Xfinity on Demand. But I must say, I think it's a great series, with the perfect blend of horror, drama, and comedy. I like how the storyline has taken an unexpected twist, where Erik Northman is the voice of reason, while Bill Compton has become not only a deluded follower of Lilith, but also apparently an uber vampire. My favorite character I sheepishly admit is the wonderfully twisted, cunning, half crazed, pan-sexual three thousand year old vampire, Russel Edgington. That guy had me in stitches with laughter.

True Blood was supposed to be the most "adult" of the various vampire franchises, but where has the story gone now? It seems to have become the most fantasy-like and childish.

The vampire show I like the best nowadays is the U.S. version of Being Human. I like the characters.
