In your opinion, in chronological order, from best to worst, what are the best/worst American Civil War movies ever made?

The 1989 Matthew Broderick movie "Glory" is the only one I can think of at the moment. There's also the recent 2012 "Lincoln" movie although I'm not sure if that counts as a civil war movie.

Yellowneck is said by some to be a bad Civil War movie from the '50s but it has the priceless line "I would like to cut his heart out and throw it in his face!"

Gettysburg. Terrific movie with a rousing score!

Considering when it was made, GWTH is a masterpiece. The scene with a thousand moaning groaning wounded was a top notch technical effect. So was the burning of Atlanta. When GWTW was made there were still living veterans of the Civil War. It scored very high among the few Civil War soldiers still alive at the time.

That one where the south is like, we wanna keep slaves, and the north is all, no way buddy.

I like that one.

I don't question the magic of cinema that went into the make of Gone With The wind. Rather, it's the rather racist depiction of blacks happy to be slaves, with no moral implications for the "peculiar institution."

God's and Generals was the worst - too bad because the actual battle scenes were for the most part excellent, but almost everything else in the movie was awful.

Strange too that it was made by the same people who made Gettysburg, which I think is the best civil war film.

Also, one that no one mentioned was Cold Mountain, which is set during that time and the opening scene depicts the Battle Of The Crater.

Another one that nobody mentioned yet is the 1951 movie "The Red Badge of Courage" which is obviously based on the book.

I read the book back in high school, and recall liking it quite a lot.

...I will argue that ( Spoiler warnings - The South loses ! !! !! !! !! !! :P ) GWTW manages a little bit of commentary apart from the , yeah , sort-of ( SORT OF ? ) idealization of thente-bellum planation system ~ For instance , the first shot of any human being is of slaves , bbacking up the point of slavery as being at the very base of the plantation system .
What if somebody tried to do a stage musical of Birth O fA Nation !
KU !

I don't really like to watch movies about war, but I guess I can add "Wild Wild West" to the list of worst movies about the American Civil War.

The Battle of the Crater is my favorite battle during the Siege of Petersburg in the American Civil War. In Cold Mountain, Ada, played by Nicole Kidman, who is one of my fave actresses, is my fave character. 8)

It's not a movie, but Ken Burns made a documentary of the Civil War back in 1990. It is very good.
