I have been enjoying Hell's Kitchen over the last 2 weeks.

Even more so when I heard that Ade Edmonson and Anthea Turner are both dyslexic/aspergers.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/ar ... crash.html

I remember seeing a TV prog a couple of years ago when Ade said that he hated having to learn lines of a script /or song because when he had to memorise something NEW it meant that other things "FELL OUT" at the other side.

I remember thinking that it was a good way of explaining his poor memory - something I share !

Well , in Anthea's case - I was under the impression that dyslexia came under the Autistic spectrum "umbrella".

Possibly I should have used the word autistic or dyslexic in the title .

We do welcome all partners of the spectrum in here - I hope !

Dyslexia isn't diagnostically related to autism. I would argue against broadening the spectrum into meaninglessness. Dyslexics don't usually show the autistic "triad of impairments" or have the same social/nonverbal behavior difficulties that those with autism do.

The UK Hell's Kitchen must not be like the one here in the USA.

I don't know those people, and the one airing here is down to the last 3 contestants. Ben, eliminated this week, I suspect has mild AS because of how he acted at times and what happened when he seemed to get overwhelmed in the kitchen.

I posted on this, but nobody replied.

Ten seconds on google unearthed these links.

Several minutes and a background in educational psychology indicates that my original statement stands. It's possible for dyslexia and many other conditions to exist alongside Asperger's Syndrome, atypical autism, PDD-NOS, Rett's, and Autistic Disorder, but dyslexia is not widely regarded as a part of the autism spectrum.

None of the links you posted indicate that dyslexia is an autism spectrum disorder, merely that it can be a co-morbid with an ASD, much like depression.

There's an unfortunate tendency on WP for people to broaden the autism spectrum to the point where it isn't diagnostically useful or meaningful. We cannot include every neurological condition on the autism spectrum if we want people with autism to get the help and resources they need. I have dyslexia, NVLD, and AS (originally diagnosed as atypical autism in the 1980's), but that doesn't mean that dyslexia is on the autism spectrum. Just because disorders occur together doesn't mean that they're the same thing.

As much as I like watching Hell's Kitchen, I'd be surprised if any aspies were contestants. The show's too brutal and nihilistic. I know I couldn't do it anyway. I only started watching the show because it come on right after The Big Bang Theory and I sometimes just let it play instead of turning the TV off. As a rule I avoid reality shows but I do like cooking.
