Thank you very much for this list.

And please allow me to add a second category of movies which have at least four strong characters whether or not said characters received nominations.

I'd start with The English patient - nominated in 3 of the 4, only missing best supporting actor and I'd argue William DaFoe's performance, and maybe even Naveen Andrew's, was worthy of at least a nomination.

Raging Bull and Spielberg's Lincoln both got the Best Actor and were nominated for both Supporting categories. Daniel Day-Lewis was great as Lincoln himself.

Dances With Wolves got all but the Best Actress nomination.

Some film tidbits:

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) was so close! It didn't get supporting actress, but is one of the only three movies to win all of the Big 5. The other 2 were It Happened One Night (1934) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991).

Network has one of the only two actors to win an Oscar posthumously (Peter Finch, best actor) and the other was The Dark Knight (Heath Ledger, best actor).

DDL is the only actor to win three best actor awards (My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, Lincoln).

12 Years a Slave is the first movie directed by a black director to win best picture.

The English Patient is one of the most oscar nominated movies in history (although that record is held by All About Eve and Titanic) earning 12 nominations and winning 9.

Both American Hustle and Silver Lining Playbook were directed by David O. Russell. This year, AH was made fun of for earning 10 nominations, but winning none.

Am I the only WP member who's still glad American Hustle didn't win any Oscars?

It was a great movie, but 10 nominations was spoiling the movie.

@Russian K12: Heath Ledger actually won Best Supp. Actor for The Dark Knight, not Best Actor.

Question to Everyone: Which Oscar contenders are you looking forward to when they are released later this year?

Thanks, don't know how I missed that.

As for your question, I can't wait for Gone Girl, Exodus, and Interstellar look the best!
What do you think of Kill the Messenger?

Those are some good choices. I think Under the Skin and Boyhood would be some good contenders, but sadly, I doubt the Academy will acknowledge them.

Many people who have seen Boyhood have said that it is the year's first legit Oscar contender and I plan on seeing Boyhood when it opens in Portland on August 1st.

As for Under The Skin, I think that because of its spring release date, it could end up being one of the most underrated movies of this year.

I'm so glad Boyhood is getting the credit it deserves, and I'm so jealous you live in a place where they will actually show smaller films (although this one is shaping up to be a pretty big one, hopefully).
Are you a movie critic? Or is it just one of your special interests? I've never met anyone that actually knows about these things and it's making me really excited! (sorry i'm such a weirdo).

No, I am not a movie critic, but I used to write movie reviews that were published in the Catholic newspaper in Portland. I got "told off" by a reader who didn't like seeing movie reviews in the Catholic newspaper "just because" and that ticked me off very badly that I stopped.
