:P The British situation comedy " STEPTOE AND SON " has been called " the greatest situation comedy of all time " by some ( Generally British , of course ! !! !! !! !! !! ) writers . I have never seen it .
In the 1970s , an American remake of it was made , " SANFORD AND SON " , with Redd Foxx and Lamont Wilson as the equivalent characters , now an African-American father and son operating their junk shop in the Watts , Los Angeles?? , area . It was sucessful and well-liked , and I watched it at the time , but not since .
Does anybody have any familiarity with " Steptoe " ? ( Were the characters Cockneys , or another grouping ????????? ) Obviously , this rather ties in to the earlier posting about " All In The Family " I participarted in  ! !! !! !! !!
Also speaking of American sit-com from Brit-com remakes in the polyester leisure suit decade , " THREE'S COMPANY " was remede from a UK seris called...Man About The House ? And , " Three's "'s spin-off " THE ROPERS " was re-made from a similar spin-off from the UK original ?
I guess I could try Wiki-ing this up , but , I want to get this up NOW! No time like the present , I always say...  :P

Another sitcom in the U.S. around that time, "Too Close for Comfort", was based on a British sitcom, "Keep it in the Family".

I started watching Sanford and Son on TV Land a few years ago. Redd Foxx is hilarious.

I love Sanford and Son. It's one of my favorite all time shows. I try to always watch it on TV land. I'm a Redd Fox fan. He played the role of Fred Sanford very well. I also thought that Grady (his friend) was very funny also.

Someone also mentioned Too Close for Comfort. That's another personal favorite of mine. Too bad they don't rerun it anymore on TV. I have the First and Second season DVD of that series.

I never saw the British version of these two shows before.

"I think this is the big one! You hear that, Elizabeth? I'm coming to join you, honey!"

Man About the House, the UK version of Three's Company, had another spinoff called Robin's Nest. The U.S. equivalent was Three's a Crowd (which only lasted one season).

Steptoe and Son ran from 1962-1974 in the UK, most of the 1960s output being in black and white. It was pretty funny, though it wouldn't get made in today's PC climate (the same could be said of Till Death Us Do Part from the same era).

It was also very 'claustrophobic', most of the scenes being set in the scrapyard, and the majority of the humour was verbal. It was supposedly set in Shepherds Bush in West London, where the BBC headquarters are, and both main characters spoke in working-class London accents, which would probably sound odd to viewers in many parts of the world.
