I will admit that maybe a stupid question because I do really know why he is evil but there are some questions that come to mind and I may need corrections on some opinions. In Thor (2011) the frost giants break into that room on Asgard which had that glowing box thing (I'm sorry I can't remember what it's called) and they shouldn't have been able to. Later Thor leads Loki, Sif and the Warriors Three to the Frost Giants realm and when Loki touches one of them his skin turns blue. Later when he touches that box he turns blue again and is revealed by Odin that he was one of them and Loki is angry and Odin later goes into his sleep and with Thor banished Loki is in charge. He later visits Thor and tells him that Odin is dead but he's actually not. Loki later goes to see the Frost Giants and he reveals that he was the one of lead them in at the beginning. But the reason for that was because he wanted to ruin his brother's big day. So I can understand he turned to the darkside after the truth about his birth but that frost giants thing was that just for fun? Was he evil before he discovered his birthright? He later lead the Frost Giants to Asgard to have them kill Odin but he lead them into a trap and killed them which I believe was to impress Odin because there was that scene where he fell into that wormhole thing and before that he said something to Odin about saying that he "could have done it" and Odin said "No Loki" and Loki let go. Now those are reasons for him being evil though was he evil before he discovered the truth about his birth. Then in The Avengers he decided to rule the earth. Now this is where the actually question comes to mind. Why does Loki want to take over the earth? Is it because he sees himself as a god and the humans as insects? Was earth just the beginning, did he want to take over Asgard as well? Would he have done something like this if he didn't know about his birth or even if he was really Odin's son? I could also ask the question as to why Loki couldn't just use the Tesseract to transport him to Asgard and launch his attack there but I guess he needed a machine like the one Selvig built and Heimdell would have probably seen him but then again Loki has tricked Heimdell before.

The movie version of Loki felt betrayed by being lied to his entire life. He believes himself smarter than his "brother" Thor and therefore more worthy of ruling Asgard. He is envious of his brother who he believes has always been the favorite of Odin and Frigga.

Loki is driven by envy, a lust for power, ambition and a very strong feeling of entitlement. I'm sure he doesn't believe himself to be evil, at least not yet. Possibly he thinks he might as well act evil since everyone believes him to be evil anyway.

If you want the mythic reason (sou of the classic mythology) to Loki opposing the Asgard gods. Loki, who was before a figure working on his own, sometimes for the gods, sometimes as well tricking them, killed by a trick/use of knowledge one of Odins sons, in an contest that was about Odins sons posing, that he couldnt be killed. ^^ To punish Loki, Odin ordered Loki to be chained on a rock and a poisonous snake torturing him with her venomous, hurtful bites. When he finally got free Loki was pretty pissed about that, and so joined with the giants, oposing the Asgard gods.

So the Marvel comic definitly didn´t relie on the Asgard sagas 1:1, but Loki being a kind of trickster and not having good relations with Odin and Thor, is as classic as Lucifer having struggles with god. ^^
