I've not read many books that became movies. From the ones I have read, 2001, The Shining, and Clockwork Orange films are all much more nuanced and interesting than their source material, and I'm a big fan of Clarke and King.

I'm currently reading The Secret Garden. I've decided a long time ago that the 1993 movie version was better than the book.

I should add the Leonardo DiCaprio version of The Great Gatsby.

I would say Contact - both the book by Carl Sagan and the movie with Jodie Foster are excellent, though the movie does deviate from the book in a few important respects.

Also, the movie Gettysburg with Martin Sheen and Jeff Daniels amount others - every bit as good as the book it was based on - The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara which won the Pulitzer Prize.

I can't get down with this at all.

The film is pretty good and is certainly nothing to be ashamed of (unlike, say, A Series Of Unfortunate Events), but the book is amazing, truly one of the great pieces of literature, moving and accessible on a first read but with so much more beneath the surface.

Coraline. (I know some aren't okay with the additions like Wybie and stuff, but I thought it was an improvement.)

I'm not a big fan of fiction, so I haven't read a lot of books which have been made in to movies afterwards.

I did however read The Green Mile before seeing the movie (it was on sale just before the movie aired - successful businessmen are successful), and I found the movie to be even better than the book, mostly because of the great performance by the now late Michael Clarke Duncan.
