Captain Phillips

6 nominations and no wins. I'm surprised that Tom Hanks didn't even get nominated for doing Phillips himself.

Am I the only one who's happy American Hustle didn't win anything at the Oscars?

Great movie, but it got shut out the other day.

Did the original Star Wars trilogy ever win anything?

"Episode IV" won the following at the 1978 Academy show; Ben Burtt also won a Special Achievement Award for sound effects.

Best Art & Set Decoration
Best Costume Design
Best Sound
Best Film Editing
Best Effects & Visual Effects
Best Music

"Episode V" also won for Best Sound, while another Special Achievement Award was given to Brian Johnson, Richard Edlund, Dennis Muren, and Bruce Nicholson for visual effects.

The only Oscar given to "Episode VI" was another Special Achievement Award, to Edlund, Muren, Ken Ralston, and Phil Tippet, again for visual effects.

The Oscars are just a popularity game. Movies that are risky never get the award. Horror movies never get it, the same with comedies. Sci-fi movies rarely do well, the ones that Star Wars picked up were consolation gifts to George Lucas and company.

And DON'T get me started with the Best Director awards...

Just one more parameter: only the Hollywood elite have any input. If the Academy members actually gave a damn about worldwide audiences, most major blockbusters would sweep the ceremony every year.

At the very least, getting nominated is an anknowledgement for their work. Prehaps they should just stop there and let everyone make their own decision.

Eastern Promises. Viggo Mortensen was nominated, and was robbed by Daniel Day Lewis. The movie wasn't nominated for anything else.

The main problem is that it is a movie that you really need to watch twice to really appreciate.

I think the Academy was more to blame than Mr. Lewis.

If you do a search for Best Motion Pictures that didn't get the award, I'm sure you'll find a listing of year by year movies that got Best Picture that were actually mediocre. The Academy always votes towards American actors and directors who are popular in Hollywood. I pity Christopher Lee, the man has been in something like 200 movies and has never been nominated. I think Stanley Kubrick, who lived here, but was a Yank, was only nominated for "2001." For that matter, if a director was known for doing risky, inventive things in his movies, he didn't get the award. Alfred Hitchcock got an honorary award, which is pathetic when you think of it.

American Hustle

I just recently noticed that The Shawshank Redemption got NO nominations at all. That is a classic film.

No, it was nominated. Seven times to be exact. It just didn't win any. Not even Morgan Freeman's Red. Instead Tom Hanks got it for Forrest Gump.

The Shawshank Redemption (which is considered by many as the best movie *ever*) will forever be the example of the greatest failure of the movie industry to acknowledge talent.

It should be noted, though, that it had to compete with Forrest Gump at the Oscars. Had Forrest Gump been released a year earlier or later, The Shawshank Redemption may have received the glory it deserved at the Academy Awards.

It was unfortunate that 2 of the best movies of all time had to compete against each other in the same year.
