The ending reminded me of the end of "Gone With the Wind". People argued whether Rhett came back.
I like to believe Tony Soprano is/was safe. In his environment, he was compassionate. For those into Jung, I think Bobby and the bartender were Tony's "shadow" self.
Almost every character on the show was illuminating some aspect of Tony, that was part of the brilliance.
I hated the end the first time I saw, it but now I think it was perfect.
The funny thing is though, he wasn't really compassionate at all. We like to think he was, but he was really a monster if ever a human was. It's just that with fiction you can love the monster as you embrace your own dark side. In real life, you'd be running from him. He wasn't ever really good to any one unless he got something out of it, except his kids and still sucked as a father. Still and all I love that guy!!
